S & W 642 no lock-- should I buy?

I just purchased the Pro Series 642 from Grabagun. It was $410 and is cut for moon clips. Actually it is supposed to be cut for moon clips. Mine wasn't and it's now back at the factory hopefully to be returned soon!

Barrel cracking? Unlikely! If it happens, you send it back to S&W -- and they fix or replace it for free. Unless you were using re-loads, in which case you chalk it up to experiential learning.

My barrel cracked within 50 rnds, and no +p or reload was ever fired from it. But, like you stated, S&W replaced it for free.

That would be a fair price for a NEW 642, pass on it and get a new one.

Fondle a Ruger LCR before buying the 642; you might like it better.

The barrel doesn't crack, the frame cracks.

Upon further review, I noticed some metal particles in the back of the trigger guard . I presume these are from the lockwork.

Please play for me Roy Orbison's "Running Scared".

I am presently negotiating for an old model 49 bodyguard.

Best of luck to all.

Old guy, old guns.

My barrel split from just forward of the frame, about 1/2" long. I don't have pics, as this was years ago and I sold it immediately afterwards, but S&W replaced the barrel and sent it back to me. I've since been suckered back in to the Airweight world, with a 637, and a Model 38 Bodyguard.

The barrels are the same as the ones on the M36's and older 38 SPL M60's.
Its only the frames that might be more likely to split on an Airweight. The barrels should have the same failure rate as for the all steel revolvers. This is also true for the cylinders.

Best,
Rick

If you're not in a hurry, keep an eye out for sales at KY Gun Co. They've offered them from $330-$380 in the last six months and they'll usually ship it to your dealer for free.
