I didn't want to hijack the perfect revolver thread but it got me thinking, I think the best looking revolver is a model 65 3in. I love the fixed sights look on my model 60, the 65 looks even better. but I have a question, I noticed some 65's are lady smiths and some are not. whats the deal with that? same model number just different variations? this one is on gunbroker right now, if I had the money I would buy it. nice looking!!

M-65

There are many on this forum that share your appreciation of the M-65, me being one of them. I have owned one since 1976, and have carried them in both the 4 and 3" versions. The Ladysmith has the shrouded ejector rod housing, and the std M-65 does not. The Ladysmtih's that I have seen also have the etching on the side plate. LS or regular M-65, they are the "best of breed" IMO for a carry revolver.

S&W 65's rock, I have a 65-3 and a 65-5. The LS version has the shrouded barrel, "LadySmith" etching, rosewood stocks, and a satin type finish, a fancy little case too, IIRC.

Nothing wrong with a S&W 64 3" HB revolver either. Mine is a 64-3.

Edit: Loc n load and ColbyBruce type faster than me, beat me to it.

"Standard" may not be the right word, but I'll use it. Standard 65s don't have a shrouded ejector rod, but the Ladysmiths did (I can't guarantee they all did). Some people prefer the shrouded ejector rod, and I think that's what makes the Ladysmiths so popular. And yes, the Ladysmith is just a variation on the standard 65.

Agree 100%, my first S&W purchase was a 65 4 inch. My all time favorite and I wish there were more fixed sight revolvers in other calibers.

My first K-frame was a 3" 65-3 cop trade-in. I never even thought of buying anything but a snubbie for concealed carry, but when I saw that 3" 65, it was love at first sight. It has super lines -- aesthetically, it's simple and all in balance.

My local gunshop has a standard 4" model 65 in excellent condition. They want $600 for it.Fair price or not?

I have a 65-3 4", a 65-3 3", and 65-5 4". I love these revolvers. There are two 65-3 police trade ins at GT Distrbutors in Dallas. Both 4". Price is 389.00 each. That's not bad in this area.

Wow, you need a carved pair of holsters & matching belt for an awesome BBQ rig!

I agree that a 3" 65 is hard to improve upon. This one is my personal favorite. It's a custom 65-5 that a previous owner had the barrel swapped out on with the one you see here - I assume it originally came with a 4" barrel. The current barrel has large font lettering, unlike any Ladysmith I have ever seen. The lettering is similar to the later Performance Center barrels. When I got the gun, it had been polished, had case color hardened trigger & (bobbed) hammer and was sporting Uncle Mikes grips. I gave it more of an original looking finish, using Scotch Brite, swapped in flash chromed semi target hammer and trigger, and changed out the grips. It is now the perfect revolver to me.

This is what it looked like when I got it. (Not bad, mind you, I just figured that since it was already modified, I might as well make it my own.)

Here's Lady Smith wearing a set of vintage, two piece Hogue stocks. Someone ground on the hammer spur before I rescued her. I'lll get a another hammer someday. The LS is nice, but my plain old 65, 3", HB, RB is a favorite working gun. I love its balance.
