I had to take my wife to get an endoscopy this morning, she had a colonoscopy some 10 days ago.
While she was in with the gastroenterologist I happened to take a walk but came back a bit too soon to her "room", well not really, 3 walls and a curtain.
Little did I know that next to me was the "recovery room" which was on just the other side of the wall.
I could faintly hear another doctor tell a man, matter of factly, " did you not have trouble passing food" The man muttered something about having stomach pains and that's why he was there, then I hear the doc say "you have a major blockage in your colon, with a large tumor"
.
I could hear the man ask if the doctor thought it had spread, but didn't really hear the answer.
Immediately I felt my own stomach drop, it was a terrible thing to hear, devastating news.
The doctor advised the man that he wouldn't be leaving the hospital until surgery was scheduled. There's was a bit of muffled conversation and then I saw the man wheeled out, and just caught a glimpse of him going past me. He appeared to be in his early 50's. I really tried not to look, but he was within 10 feet.
The nurse called me in, my wife was on a gurney some 10 feet away from man, separated by a curtain. She heard the whole thing clearly, even though still sedated. She did mention the doc said it had probably spread.
I thought this could have been done more discreetly, they could have taken the man to a private room.
This really ruined my day. My heart goes out to this man, whomever he is, along with his loved ones.
My wife is fine, she has had some acid reflux, but that's being treated.
Get that colonoscopy now, don't wait.
