I had to take my wife to get an endoscopy this morning, she had a colonoscopy some 10 days ago.
While she was in with the gastroenterologist I happened to take a walk but came back a bit too soon to her "room", well not really, 3 walls and a curtain.
Little did I know that next to me was the "recovery room" which was on just the other side of the wall.

I could faintly hear another doctor tell a man, matter of factly, " did you not have trouble passing food" The man muttered something about having stomach pains and that's why he was there, then I hear the doc say "you have a major blockage in your colon, with a large tumor" :(.
I could hear the man ask if the doctor thought it had spread, but didn't really hear the answer.
Immediately I felt my own stomach drop, it was a terrible thing to hear, devastating news.

The doctor advised the man that he wouldn't be leaving the hospital until surgery was scheduled. There's was a bit of muffled conversation and then I saw the man wheeled out, and just caught a glimpse of him going past me. He appeared to be in his early 50's. I really tried not to look, but he was within 10 feet.

The nurse called me in, my wife was on a gurney some 10 feet away from man, separated by a curtain. She heard the whole thing clearly, even though still sedated. She did mention the doc said it had probably spread.
I thought this could have been done more discreetly, they could have taken the man to a private room.

This really ruined my day. My heart goes out to this man, whomever he is, along with his loved ones.

My wife is fine, she has had some acid reflux, but that's being treated.

Get that colonoscopy now, don't wait.

Good post can't be repeated often enough, especially given that there are so many of us here who are, um, "mature". Putting it off is the ultimate foolishness. A fatal error. My father in law passed away three weeks ago at 72 due to colon cancer that had spread to his liver. He was exactly one month from diagnosis to dead. We were good friends. In cleaning out his home my wife found an unused prep kit over a year old. He'd obviously been ordered to have the test that long ago and had put it off.

I had both procedures, colon-endo done 6 1/2 years ago, and the doc told me to come back in 10. I'm seriously thinking of getting another set right now, this event really shook me up.

I'm scheduled for my first one in November. Should give me enough time to learn the lyrics to Moon River ('hey doc, you got the whole hand up there...?').

Not looking forward to it, but important to take care of yourself.

Prep day's more like "Ring of Fire."

I had my third one last year.
The proctologist wanted to do another in three years but my family doctor said since there was nothing again, wait five years.(If I'm still around):)
My wife has also had three with nothing, so for her five years also....

Coupla things to remember for prep day. Dab, don't wipe and my wife says, "don't forget the baby wipes."

Had my fourth one recently. They've removed a polyp or two on three tests. I'm on the five-year plan.
When the happy drugs start kicking in next time, I'll be singing,

Tell them you want to be knocked out and ask for Propofal. You'll never know it happened and there's almost no hangover. You're awake in 15 minutes. Lights out, lights on. I now know why Michael Jackson liked that sleep juice sooooo much.

My prep day wasn't that bad, they had me mix a whole bottle of Mirilax into a two liter bottle of Gatorade and drink it all. It was just like pissing through the other orifice. Not at all like the crampy ****z you get with the flu or eating something bad....And with modern twilight IV's, you don't remember anything. But man, afterwards, I was HUNGRY.

I would add, if you're adopted get it done sooner. I tried to get one at 40, but my doc said I couldn't, because I didn't have a family history. I told him, "I'm adopted, how do you know I don't have a family history?" I found another doc and got one done at 45. Same thing if your parents died early, like in their 30's or 40's, of a heart attack or car crash. How do you know they wouldn't have developed colon cancer at 45 or 50?

My brother was just diagnosed with rectal cancer. June 6 he starts the chemo, radiation, resection, colo bag and chemo regimen. A preventative colonoscopy picked this up.

I am a 14 month stage IV head and neck cancer survivor. I am still recovering so I know, somewhat, what he faces.

Please pray for him (Dave) and as Ladder has suggested, get it checked.

I had one three years ago, three ulcers detected and 4 pollups, non benign but I had to have Dr. Longfinger do a follow up cavity search last week. He found some wicked hemorrhoids and a lost set of car keys but all else looked good (so to speak ). Over 50? Get it done. I had him write a note to my wife that my head was not up there.

Due to my having cancer in 1999-2000 that likes to spread to colon/bowels... I've had 6 or 7 colonoscope & full GI series done ... the last one 2 yrs ago& was clear.. if I don't have any problems come back in 3... but I get full torso MRI & Pet scan every 3-5 months too......

added : Charmin with Aloe Vera toilet paper is your friend........... & I'm a dyed in the wool Quilted Northern man......... but when it's time for a GI series Charmin with Aloe Vera is the only way to go......... I've never had to use baby wipes........ yet........
