Hey All,

I picked up a new 340 M&P this afternoon....Man, I had forgotten just how EASY a j-frame is to carry!

Disappeared under a tee shirt and shorts...ZERO chance of printing, and was virtually weightless riding in a Remora holster.

Going to break it in tomorrow.....this one will only see 38+P action, as I've owned one before, and the 357 just wasn't.....worth it?

Full range report to follow soon....

Post up your 340 LOVE!

I've wanted one for a while now... Someday... I would certainly limit it to .38 specials for my own sake.

Be sure to post pics of it!

I have one and yes it carries very easy. I also stick to .38 +P's but I was able to get a hold of some sb .357 and I'm going to give them a try.

I fired 357 rounds through my last 340.....
While it surely wasn't the "hit your hand with a hammer" feeling that many profess it to be.....

I'm much faster on target with 38+P loads.

funny.....the sights are one of the big POSITIVES for me.

What don't you like about them?

I'm pretty much completely self-defense oriented. It might offer some advantages during range time, but otherwise I think it a overall hindrance in the context of personal defense.

One evening there was a loud bang(turned out to be a shelf falling)from our bathroom. I waited a few seconds and when I heard no farther sound or movements and then went to check it out. I had a 340 M&P on me and it was completely dark in the hallway and the bathroom. As I was moving and trying to see through the darkness, I found that night sight terribly distracting and that it interfered with my night vision. I also noticed it even back lighted me to a minor degree in total darkness.

In a civilian self-defense scenario, you most likely won't even use the sights at all. Threat focused shooting is the norm and preferred as they happen at extremely close quarters, so why have a more expensive night sight with a slightly higher profile that emits radiation(no matter minimal) when I see it as a disadvantage. Interesting article. While not at any of the big name schools I have done FOF at home and at some smallish local schools and generally agree that flash sight pictures (silhouetting the gun) was the normal choice if any was taken, but one of the guns did have a big white dot that you could still see even when doing more threat focused shooting that helped getting better hits. (For me at least.)

With the standard dot and U notch rear it seems to help in the longer or more precision shot talked about in the link.

Granted everyone's eyes are so different on what works for them I normally don't recommend any certain sight as the best.

BTW: None of my current carry guns have NS, but don't think they are bad to have either.

A little while back I wrote a thread about my M&P340:

I fondled a 386 Nightguard that had that sight setup, and it was great, IMO. I prefer XS Big Dots whenever I'm able to get them for any handgun I have.

I wish I could get them for my 686PC snub, but I can't find a single replacement sight for that S&W revolver dovetail. I have them on my Kimber Pro Carry II currently.

I love a night sight on a defensive gun.
I think they should be more commonly called "low light sights" vs night sights, as "low light" is better suited.

For me, the 340's XS dot sight is a plus, even while "point shooting" or under stress, etc...

If you train to see your sights, you will use them, even in close quarters or under duress. The white dot/night sight only makes this easier (IMO)

We all train differently, though, and I'm glad to hear your take on this awesome defensive revolver.

Thanks!

The sight set up on the 386 Night Guard and all Night Guards is, yes, and XS Big Dot Front Sight, however, the rear is a Cylinder and Slide U Notch Rear Sight Assembly. Very different from the U Notch Channel Sight on the M&P340. Just a U Shaped groove cut into the frame.

You can indeed install the C&S rear sight on your 686PC. As far as the front sight, not sure if someone makes a night sight for it.

re: 340 sights

We all have had different experiences. It's what shapes us, in part. Some folks hate rubber grips on concealment guns because their outer garment hangs up on the rubber. I've never had this happen.

Some pocket-carry exposed hammer handguns and never had the hammer impede the draw by catching on the pocket. I couldn't draw such a gun from a laundry bag without the hammer snagging!

Some folks say .357 in a snub is wasted power. I'm still actively looking for a J-frame that holds five 12-gauge slug rounds.

Friend of mine once said, for every Jack, there's a Jill. At least there are still Jills out there!

Some good points! :)

I'll have to remember that saying and send you royalties. :D

Took the 340 out for a break in today.

I only fired 75 rounds or so......38 spec 158 gr and 38+P 125gr

It had been a long while since I fired rounds through a J-frame, and I found myself pulling shots to the right...finger too "deep" in the trigger, perhaps?

Everything functioned smoothly, and I'm happy to have a pocket/IWB carry that is SO easy to take along.....

Much dry fire and range time coming up....(and pics pics pics this weekend)

Oh yeah, I tried out "Rastof's Challenge", so head over to the concealed carry subforum to see how I did....

The pucker factor increases - exponentially...

Now THAT'S A HOOT!

LMAO ;=]
