Alright fellas, it's time for me to step up again. This time I took my new Ruger GP100 Match Champion with me. You can read about it here:http://smith-wessonforum.com/firear...p100-match-champion-review.html#post138657034
As I stated before, I'm impressed with how well a lot of you revolver guys have been shooting. I'm still struggling with that long DA pull, but this gun makes it a lot easier.
Here is my first go at the challenge:
Here it is closer and measured:
Obviously not a "winner", but I'm pleased with it. This was shot as "cold" as anyone can shoot. It was not only my first shots of the day, but the first time I've ever shot this gun.
That one shot off to the left was my first shot at 10 yards. It definitely deserves a
if ever there was one. I just lost concentration on that one.
Well, not completely satisfied with that, I tried again. This time shooting single action:
This group was shot while aiming at the number 8 above the center. It would fit inside the orange center, but is offset to the right. That would put those three "loners" out of the orange.
I really like this gun, but I can see I have some work to do to catch up with you guys.

Looks like I'm gonna have to shoot this with my wheel gun that I've owned for almost 30 years. Rastoff has thrown down another gauntlet.

Ok my friend it is time for me to take my GP-100 and shoot this thing. Mine is not the Match Grade os you will have to cut me a little slack, but it is a Talos with gold hammer and trigger I am sure that will help.

Well... I tried again.
Slightly better with the double action revolver. Slightly worse with my Kimber. And... as my son and I were going to the range today, he offered to let me shoot maiden shots with his brand new Glock 22.

Not only shooting skills, but writing/drawing skills as well.
I wish I had the patience to decorate targets like that......definitely puts a nice finishing touch to it.
Bob O, thank you! But easily explained... I'm a machine and tool designer by trade for the last 40 years. It's all CAD now, but in the '70's and '80's, it was pencil, paper, drawing boards, and some drafting practice. Although degraded, I retained a little of the lettering skill.
When I started shooting a couple years ago, a friend gave me a tube of large targets labeled TWENTY FIVE YARD STANDARD PISTOL TARGET. I measured the rings, and transferred the circles to a AutoCAD 2D drawing. When I need targets, I just print off a quantity at work on 11" x 17" copier. To aid in seeing the danged thing because I'm older than dirt, I was using a 1" diamond of red duct tape. That got too labor intensive, so now I just use a felt tip marker.
When I saw this Rastoff thread, I modified the inner ring to the oval.

This is a humbling challenge. I thought I could come inside the ring with my 686. But double action? Ha! Can't get better than a 4" group!

I ate humble pie again today. Tried the Challenge again with my 686, and obviously it was the guns fault, it's old and creaky. Naw, I'm the one that's older and creaky. I used some cast wad cutters with gas checks that I loaded on Jan 26 1987. Shot cold, double action and I did terrible. But I'll just go again and practice more.

As I promised in a previous post, (#314), I broke out my family heirloom 1938 H&R “Expert” .22LR revolver, and put it through Rastoff’s Challenge. Target photos are attached. I shot it both double and single (rule violation!) action. I didn’t come close to beating Rastoff, but I think I did fairly well under the circumstances. I call my Expert my 1-millimeter gun, because the front sight is 1mm wide, and the rear sight is 1mm high, with a 1mm wide notch. The rear sight is virtually invisible at my indoor range. Add in a 15-20 lb. double action trigger pull, and it becomes a real challenge to shoot accurately. In addition, I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts! IT WASN'T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD!

I wish I had a decent revolver to try this with. My only one is an old and loose Charter Arms Chief's special. It can't hold a group at 3 yds much less 10....LOL!!!
Maybe I'll give it a try just for laughs. Actually, I'm going to take my wife's aunt out to the range next week. She just got her CPL and wants to go out and shoot.....learn some things. She has a Smith snubby....hopefully its in better condition than mine.

Gentlemen, this has been really fun to be part of. I'm ingratiated and humbled that you all have put such effort into it. I am working on another challenge, but trying to keep it simple like this one.
Trying to come up with a concept that doesn't require a timer and isn't coming from the holster is challenging in and of itself. Nevertheless, I have an idea and will try to post Rastoff's Challenge III this weekend.

Geez, you've been reloading for a long time!!! I'm going to try my hand at it this winter.
Yes, I've loaded for a while, some of my records go back to 1976. Back then I had steady hands and could see. Now, I (not making excuses, it happens to all of us), have trembling hands and poor eyesight. I check and double check my reloading procedures so that there are no double charges and such. I still have fun shooting, fishing and playing music though.

I tried the challenge again today with two different guns.
First, for the heck of it, I shot it with my 22lr race gun. It started life as a Ruger MKII. Currently there is not a single Ruger part on this gun. About $1800 later, everything on the lower half, including the receiver and all internals, are Volquartsen. The upper is a Tactical Solutions. The bolt is also Volquartsen. It is always run suppressed with an AAC Prodigy. It has a Burris FastFire for aiming.
Obviously this does not count since I don't carry this gun, but fun anyway.
Here are the results with American Eagle 45gr Suppressor Ammo. Not known for its accuracy, but it will do.
Next up was my brand new to me S&W 22 Thunder Ranch 45ACP. I picked it up yesterday. It is in like new condition and was hardly fired by the previous owner. I fired 2 cylinders yesterday when I picked it up to make sure it functioned properly.
I only fired 20 rounds out of it today. The ones on the target below. Considering the classic design and it has an all black fixed front and rear gutter sight, I am pretty happy with this gun. It is dead on accurate. Not bad considering I shot this gun cold and have never really shot it before. All shots fired Double Action. While the trigger is smooth, it is pretty heavy.
I really wanted to shoot my FN 5 7 again for this challenge, but time did not allow today.

Yeah, the pseudo Mark II is outside of the concept, but you sure nailed that target well. The target shot with the S&W is just durn good shootin' my friend. Well done.
