Rastoff's Challenge- Dropping the Gauntlet

Instead of the 4-6-6-4 from 3yds/5/7/10......
I fired 5 rounds each at 3 yds/5/7/10.
Perfectly fine by me. Considering the cylinder limitations, it's a reasonable alternative. This is not a reload drill and it's difficult enough without adding a reload.

In fact, it's what I offer to my students if they show up with a 5 round revolver. So far, all have opted to do it the 4, 6, 6, 4 method, but I offer the 5x4 as well.

Neither is it an advantage for you. Yes, you get one more shot at 3 yards, but you also have to take one more at 10. That evens it out in my book.

Nice shooting.

Excited for tomorrow!!! :)

I just saw this competition on Friday when it was mentioned in another forum. I had to go to the range today to sight in a couple of red dots on my rifles.

I figured I would bring my 2 main carry guns and run a round of each to give this a try. My FN Five Seven and my S&W 586 L Comp.

My main carry is an FN Five Seven. If you are not familiar with this gun, you should become familiar. The SS198 rounds I carry and practice with leave the barrel at 2400 Fps. And when they enter a soft target they tumble like mad. Very devastating round. The gun weighs 27 ozs fully loaded with 21 rounds! 5" barrel we are talking about here. I carry it IWB wearing shorts and a t shirt. I live in South Florida and that is how I dress everyday. A loaded 20 round mag weighs 7 ozs. I have thousands of rounds through my two 5 7s. They are built and run like fine Swiss watches. 500 rounds and the gun is as clean as when you started. Most accurate handguns I have owned and very little recoil. Amazing gun!

Here are the results of my one round.

Next up was my 586 L Comp shot DA only. This is the gun I carry when I want to carry a wheelgun. Granted it has been tuned, but it is still a DA pull albeit a light one. My one round.

I'm going to head to the range this week and actually warm up with these guns and then run a few rounds. I'll be back!

That is some fine shooting!!! I'm sure you will get them all in the orange on the next try or two. :)

Thanks for the support Bob O! I will definitely try a couple of more rounds this week with these same guns.

Nice shooting HarrishMasher.

I must say, I'm impressed with a lot of the wheel gun guys here. I'm pretty sure I can't do that well while shooting DA on every shot. Hmmm, I will have to try it with a wheel gun. I guess I"m challenging myself. ;)

Thanks!

I got into revolvers the last couple of years. I try to get out once a week. I can't begin to tell you how much my handgun shooting has improved since I have gotten serious about revolvers. Once you learn to shoot a DA revolver well, you will be amazed at how all of your shooting improves.

Just curious here...

Is it the follow through? Or just the concentration of keeping a smooth pull? Would makes sense.

If you can master a smooth pull on a DA revolver, you should be able to get a smooth pull on a SA.

Here's how I teach trigger pull for maximum accuracy:
  • Obtain the full sight picture with hard focus on the front sight.
  • Concentrate on keeping the front sight on target as you build pressure on the trigger.
  • Keep focus on the front sight and front sight on target until the gun goes off.
  • Obtain full sight picture after the shot. This is the mythical follow through that will make you a good shot.

If you do all that, the bullet will go through the center. Of course we all move a little as we shoot. Still, being able to maintain the sight picture through a long DA pull is great practice and takes better than average concentration.

For self-defense, still build pressure until it goes off, just do it faster. ;)

Speaking of DAO, here are the Rastoff's Challenge results for my DAO SIG P250 subcompact .380, and my Shield 9. I didn't come close to beating Rastoff or any of the other top guys. I guess I'll have to break out my ace in the hole, my H&R Expert .22LR revolver with a 10" barrel, a 1mm high rear sight with a 1mm wide notch, and a 50-lb. DA pull. It'll be a slam dunk!

It is definitely the smooth pull. Don't make the mistake of trying to slowly stage the trigger for a single-action like shot, you would never have the time to do that in a defensive situation.

I nearly got it right

I purchased my first handgun on 6-30-2015; an S&W Model 19, .357 Magnum revolver. I have taken the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting course, and I have read/studied all that I can find about my Model 19 and other handguns.
I was excited about taking this Rastoff I challenge. I went to my local gun range today and shot the challenge as described: D/A for revolvers, standing, 2-handed grip.
I got home, photographed my target with handgun, to post my results. I noticed that there are only 18 holes in the target.
I forgot to reload my 6-shot revolver (3 x 6 = 18) and take the last 2 shots at the 10 yard/30 foot distance! One of the 9s was from the 10 yd. distance. Details, Details, Details...

Nice shooting!!! Great thing is you can try it again next time out. :)

Thanks for the kind words, and for not commenting on my counting ability.

BTW, what does MSP stand for?
Massachusetts State Police,
Michigan State Police, etc.?

I loaded 6 rounds into my revolver 3 times. When the gun was empty after 18 rounds, I brought the target back to the bench to admire my results.

I didn't remember to load two more rounds to complete the final 4 shots, before bringing the target back to the bay.
