Yeah, don't ya just love them!
Fortunately, I don't have any trouble going back to sleep after letting one or another of our cats out the door every night at anywhere between 12 and 6 o'clock in the morning!
We live on a farm, and a lot goes on around here at night. 'Cat rangling' also gives me additional opportunities to check out the house and driveway while I'm up, too.
Take last night, for instance. One of them, 'nailed' the largest brown rat I've ever seen! The thing was almost as large as the cat that got him!

I only see neighborhood cats during the day. All are quiet, even the fat lazy ones. If they are outside after dark, I imagine the wolves will eat them.
there s no question the cats keep the rats and mice down thats probably why they have bad breath
Cats are very special critters. True, they don't "talk" but I never cease to be amazed at the many ways they can come up with to communicate their wants/needs. My 3 all know how to get what they want from me and nobody has to say a word.
Sounds like they have you well trained. You know the saying Dogs want a master Cats want a staff.FWIW we have 3 very large indoor only male Main Coons and when they get bounding thought the house at night it sounds like a Clydesdale running and can actually shake things a bit.
Added--- Actually many Coons are quite vocal and make a lot of different sounds!

FWIW we have 3 very large indoor only male Main Coons and when they get bounding thought the house at night it sounds like a Clydesdale running and can actually shake things a bit.
Added--- Actually many Coons are quite vocal and make a lot of different sounds!
Our oldest cat is Duke he is a main coon mix. Not really big only about 20 lbs but he has shoulder and a head like a buffalo. He knows how to jump on you and hurt you if he feels you haven't been paying enough attention. He has a very loud voice which he shares with us several times a day.
He is a real lap cat and the most affectionate by far of out 3. He's my MAN CAT!

I have three brother feral slightly tamed full grown black cats. They are awesome.
I took in two more kittens that needed a home. It depends when playtime/romper room starts. Sometimes it's just before bed at 12am. Or at 6am when the three brothers come in, after all five eat. My bed becomes part of the race track. It's ok the three brothers killed every living rodent in the yard. The kittens killed two mice in the house already. They earn there keep.
When I hear a ruckus at night if the dog doesn't bark I know it's the kittens causing trouble.
My poor cat I just put down would jump on my legs claws extended when I'm sleeping. Many nights he scored two points in the field goal kick. In my sleep he was the football. I'm sorry but I had viscous veins in my legs. He never cut one open.

If you think a can is bad you should try a ping-pong ball. You can give one to the cat of someone you really dislike and you'll love how that cat will drive him insane playing with that thing in the middle of the night.
For a really good cat toy just wad up a cash register receipt into a really tight ball. It is cost free and they will spend untold hours playing with them. They work especially well on hardwood floors.
They are a totally renewable source around here because we are at Wallyworld, CVS, Home Depot or some such just about every day.

if my cats bowl gets lower than 1/2, she wont eat, just sets there and gives me the saddest look, and it works, regards Ernie

I have 2 cats - the old female will eat nothing but canned dog food. The younger tomcat eats only dry food.
For about 10 years we had a tomcat who lived outside, on our roof and in an adjacent Oak tree. He came down only for water. He lived on roof rats, and really kept them under control. They are active only at night, and so was the cat.

My parents owned a big calico Norwegian Forest Cat when I was really young. She had to be one of the doggest cats I ever knew because she followed me everywhere, even on walks outside. When she got older, she had a habit of drooling and walking sideways, but lived to be almost 20. I doubt I'll ever meet another cat like her.

Our cat meows insistently if his food bowl is less than 3/4 full. He's lean. He just wants that bowl full all the time.
Another cat loved spring door stops in the middle of the night. It never failed. You'd be awakened by a loud BOING sound followed by the sound of a scampering cat. The sounds repeated about once per minute until he got tired of it.
Our cat is the meowing type. She will grouse loudly and repeatedly if her food bowl isn't full enough for her taste. Often choosing to do so at three am. She will not shut up until I get up and refill it for her. I once tried throwing something at her instead. It didn't work. I try to remember to check it before I go to bed, but my memory sometimes hides somewhere I can't find it.
I once bought some of those memory pills at the drugstore. I couldn't remember to take them, and they just sat in the cabinet until I had to throw them out because they were out of date (by two years).
