Carrying Occasionally

I have 4 neighbors that carry a gun occasionally. I see them around for weeks at a time then they'll carry for a day or two and then not again for a week. I'm pretty sure the one guy's gun spends more time in hock than in a holster.

I just re-read your post, "Things you learn living in a shady neighborhood", and I sure hope these people carrying aren't the panhandlers or junkies you described!

I carry when I go to the beach, I carry when I go out in the woods, and I carry at night. I carry on road trips to anywhere, especially Portland or Seattle. If I go from here to the grocery store (a mile from here) in the middle of the afternoon, I'm probably not carrying. I'm okay with that.

I'm pretty certain there are very good people here who would try to convince me of the error of my ways. I'm okay with that.

If, and this is a big if, there was a giant disaster while I was away for a few minutes, unarmed, and I couldn't get home, I do have a pistol I got for free, that I don't like, that I keep wrapped up in the wheel well of my car. It's a Ruger P89, 9mm. It is rugged and reliable, I'll give it that. I'm sure that's a foul in some peoples books, but again, I'm okay with that.

I committed to carrying as often as possible a little while back, and have been pretty successful at it. My holster has broken in comfortably, and I settled on a set of Ahrends grips that conceal very well and still allow a good firing grip. I have a good routine for going about my daily travels. I generally avoid dangerous areas at any rate. The law rather than the perceived threat level is what dictates whether or not I go armed.

Craigslist. Being new to this city ive literally entered the ghetto without realizing it. Other times there are parts of the city with good food, but in sketchy neighborhoods. It is again based more off of feelings, as in how uncomfortable I feel which will determine if I carry. Sometimes I carry to kroger sometimes to walmart. They are not in the best of locations.

So I cant explicitly answer your question with certain criteria it has to meet to be considered dangerous. I dont do statistical research into crimes in the neighborhooda I sometimes go to, but downtrodden buildings and bars on windows indicates some feelings of discomfort.
Sorry for my terrible grammar I alwaystype on my phone. Cant figure out my password to check this forum from thecomputer

Freedom is a wonderful thing. Thanks for the answer. I don't think I agree with you, but to each his or her own.

I really don't give a rodent's rear what other people choose to do about when to carry or not. Your choice, your business.

My choice is to carry anytime I'm one step outside my apartment, and have a gun in reach when I'm indoors.

That is what I've done since concealed carry licenses were first issued in Kentucky eighteen years ago.. It's what makes this crippled-up old man feel safer.

The same reasoning applies to my always carrying a cell phone and, as I've done every day for around seventy years, packing at least one knife.

It's all about having these things if I need them. Very personal.

You do as you please. I'm too tired to get as worked up as some seem to have done here.

It all comes down to your comfort level. My dad has, or at least had a carry permit, but he has never carried a gun.....ever. He first bought a gun for home defense but later got a permit. Unfortunately the gun doesn't quite fit the concealed carry role too well and not being a gun person he never bothered to get another and statistically he doesn't need it. Where he lives and works is a very nice area and nothing much happens there. The township has something like 22k people. The median family income for the township is $91,923.

By crime statistics the township has had 1 Murder (the only murder back to 2002), 1 assault and 1 burglary in 2015. The stats are pretty much the same for all other previous years. One or two assaults, a burglary or two. The biggest crime is DUI (which is probably how that murder happened), mostly on weekends and holidays.

So like I said for him it's not an issue.

How many days a week do you carry a spare tire in you vehicle? And do you take it with you only when you travel in certain areas? If you carry, carry, if you don't, stay close to someone who does.

What a great thread...

Gun store operator: May I help you?

CC: Yes. I am looking for a carry gun that is such a hassle for me that I won't carry it other than occasionally when I want to feel cool or am pretty sure that I'll be getting into a gun fight.

Gun Store Operator: Get out!

What a great person you are Phil. Im sure that youre the smartest guy in the world

I did forget to add that I wear when I go to a park with my dog. Its to protect myself and my dog against other dogs, thats the primary reason. The reason I originally got my ccw was to fend myself against dogs when I went for a run. For some people thats the primary reason they carry, but some of you would turn your nose up at this reason because the person doesnt carry all the time. Quite ridiculous. Intolerant as the liberals.

Yep thats right..

The know-it-all folks never cease to amaze me with their knowledge of when to carry and what to carry for differing social conditions. I'm admittedly dumb enough not to know everything so I carry all the time, just in case.

I like the idea that CCF/W is CCF/W, it is not supposed to be comfortable, fashionable, just life saving. IMHO

With all the options available today (caliber/size/weight) don't you think it's possible to be both comfortable AND comforted?
I do.

When Col. Cooper made his now famous statement there were very limited options available. Today, that has changed.

So, because they aren't open carrying, you assume they aren't carrying at all?

Yes, it was possible when Copper said that and it's possible now. The problem is, most don't know how to do it and choose their gun for the wrong reason.

Uh what. There is a right reason to carry? What is the right reason?

I didnt know one had to meet certain criteria to carry rightly.

Not long ago an active duty law enforcement officer and member of my church said that he had excellent firearms training and that he had successfully competed in significant pistol shooting tournaments. He said that he rarely carries a handgun. I didn't want to get into a discussion in front of folks, so I let it go, but I'm at a loss to explain or understand his thinking. I don't know if it's a statement of moral superiority or Andy Taylor syndrome. He does seem to have a very high opinion of himself, IMHO.

You know:
Feeling/looking cool
Feeling protected in those dangerous areas

So you're convinced he was "thinking"?.....
I believe he was just "feeling".

No. I carry in places more dangerous and have higher SA in those areas. Its what the military does and the police, but I guess youre smarter than everyone else right? I accept the risk that I may be attacked in places I deem safer, which I determine through appearances and news with some statistics.

It seems youre not willing to accept the same risks as I do, which is fine.

Apparently I was wrong yesterday to go for a run on a trail without a gun. Whoops!
