Rastoff's Challenge- Dropping the Gauntlet

Handsome young man, and nice pistol. I saw a Mark III today for sale, but not the bull barrel.

Today I had a chance to run one round of Rastoff with my S&W 65 Lady Smith 357 mag.

I don't carry this gun as much as I should. I say that because it is possibly the best concealed carry revolver ever made. It is the perfect blend of size, shape and firepower. It carries like a dream IWB and OWB. And it is so easy for me to shoot well. It has an excellent DA trigger from the factory (one of the best factory triggers I have ever pulled), balances perfectly, and the fixed combat gutter sight is dead on my particular example.

Every time I shoot this gun, I break out into a huge smile. Especially because I paid $330 for it 2 years ago. I rescued it from a LGS that had just put it in their range rental program. While the finish was a little rough, it seemed mechanically perfect, so I sent it to S&W to be refinished and they did an excellent job on it. S&W agreed it was mechanically perfect as well.

Anyway here is how she preformed in the challenge. Not too shabby for a 3" K Frame with a tiny fixed front sight and rear gutter sight. This gun is just a huge winner and one of my favorite S&Ws.

There are seven shots in that cluster mid-left on the target!

In the next week or so, I am going to set aside an entire range session to this challenge instead of randomly shooting one round here or there. I will pick two guns and focus on the challenge. My FN Five Seven and one of the revolvers I used above. Probably my 586 L Comp, or maybe my 22 Thunder Ranch. We will see.

It's all in your (my) head, man...

Yesterday I decided to practice trigger control. I loaded 1 full mag (17rnds) and backed up 10yds. I was shooting at a 1"x1" square.

Concentrating on controlling when the trigger breaks and returning to target...In about 90 secs. I had emptied the mag and had all 17 inside a 6"Hx3"W rectangle.

Very happy with that. I will be doing this challenge again. As trigger control and concentration were my initial weaknesses. Hopefully I can maintain that through the changing distances and the reload.

One of my training tools are 3x5 and 4x6 index cards. I'll put up 3-6 in a row and practice transitions. I also will put up one and practice draw, fire one shot, reload, fire one shot drills. They are cheap and come in colors. I like colors.

Nice shooting!! And that is a sweet pistol.....I almost bought one when they first hit the market.

Late to the party, I know.
I finally stopped waiting to find the "correct" target, and just gave it a try, using my most-often-handy revolver.
My only departure from the original instructions was to try to get each shot off as soon as I got a sight picture.

Thanks for the compliments.

Regarding the tear: this was shot at an indoor range that seems to be of poor design. The vent system swings the targets forward and back slightly. I think that the tear might be due to a bullet catching it on a backswing. Ammunition was .38 Special (slightly) +P, 158gr Speer LHP and HS-6, so lack of velocity shouldn't be causing the tearing.

OK, I'm updating this challenge. I only a very small number have succeeded. Actually, the number is so small, there are only three targets so far that meet the requirements and one of them is mine.

So you don't have to look back, the requirement is:
20 shots fired in this sequence
  • 4 from 3 yards
  • 6 from 5 yards
  • 6 from 7 yards
  • 4 from 10 yards

To "succeed" all shots must be within the orange part of the target attached to this post. You don't have to actually have this target, but all shots must be within an area the same size as the orange part of the attached target; an oval measuring 2"x3". The previous target I attached, which has a more square bull, is still acceptable as far as I'm concerned. I just remade it to be more representative of the target I use in my class.

To truly meet the concept of the challenge, the shots must be taken cold; no warm up shots.

In addition, I'm adding this bonus to anyone who succeeds:

Post a picture of a successful target, PM me your address, and I'll ship one of these to you at no cost.

Cool, just printed several to practice with. Hopefully I will have a reasonable submission soon. For my "official" submission, I'll make sure it represents the first 20 shots from that particular session.
