The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

I am no collector and mainly shoot Glocks and precision rifles. A little while ago I got it in my head that learning to work a DA revolver would improve my pistol shooting with other guns. I did a bunch of research and came to the conclusion that the 28 best intersected my intended use and the cost that I was willing to invest in this venture.

I brought this guy home today

I immediately added a set of Grasshorns.

And here it is with my current duty gun.

What can you tell me about it? I'll add the serial# in a bit. The stocks do not number to the gun.

Not much we can tell you without a serial number, other than you made a great choice! I bought my 6" 28-2 in May as a 21st birthday present to myself. I loved it so much that I am obsessed with S&W revolvers now. I now own 3 smiths. You can never have just one. If you don't believe me now, just wait until it's first trip to the range with you! Congrats!

Great looking 28 & stocks! I love the contrast between the old & new ubiquitous duty guns...

Ok so the ser# is N1976**

Got out and put 70rds through it. Learning the DA pull is going to take some time. For some reason when I mashed the trigger my shots went high right which is the opposite of the low left I would have expect when shooting other guns....

Anyway, here are the first 10rds SA at 25 with federal 158rnl. Using a 6oclock hold on the bull.

Here are the ones that were on paper from 10rds of DA at 25. The misses were high right in approximately the 5ring had I been using a full B8 target.

For comparison I typically have no problem shooting 95+ with my Glocks.

This is a personal challenge that I think will bring some fun back to shooting for me.

newest addition 28-2

Hello

Just picked up this 28-2 serial N254_ _ _

What would be the correct grips?
The ones on it have a 1983 date.

Thanks
Glen

Took my Model 28 out for the first time last week, AWESOME shooter! Drilled a bull's eye in SA at 30ft. I love it.

5 screw SN 106XXX

Here is my recently acquired pre 28. If anyone has a set of period correct grips please contact me via PM. If i can't make her whole again, thinking about hard chroming it. It will look good with the Nills. Second picture is the pre 28 wearing the grips from its little brother... the new grips don't fit quite right, i guess that's the reason why the old grips were serialized to the gun.

thanks for looking.

Congrats on the new gun! But don't refinish it! That patina looks so cool! People pay to make their new guns look like that. Just my advice. Enjoy!

My finished 28-2

I recently got my 28-2 back from David Sams (Cartersville, VA) who did an action job and a bead blast blue job. I've also put on the checkered Classic Kuracs made from Ziricote by Jon Culina. I'm shooting mid-range magnum loads: Remington 125 grain Golden Saber and reloads using 125 grain Hornady XTPs that match its POI. The Kuracs absorb recoil every bit as well as the original Cokes made back in the 50's.

This is what the gun can do at 50 yards with the Golden Saber loads.

This is fast becoming one of my favorite revolvers.

Keith

28-2

Was able to pick this up yesterday. S/N N9510xx. Non pinned but recessed. Shot it today for the first time. I am impressed. This is my first N frame 357. Way more accurate than me. I think its going to be shot a lot.
