The Shields, and M&P line, are an unqualified success.

A million M&P's already! I bet that is about how many 3rd gens were manufactured over the 20 years that they were made by S&W. What do you guys and gals think? More or less than a million?

1,000,000 Shields since early 2012, less than 4 years. They might rival the 6,000,000 or so M&P revolvers made someday, if they continue the line. Who knows how many other M&P's have been made.

I wonder how many of them have shot and owned a 3rd Gen? What do they know???

A lot, if not most, people who work at S&W don't own or shoot guns. One of the factory tours I went on, back when they did those, was by a retired guy who worked for S&W for over 30 years. He was given an N frame revolver when he retired and told use he never shot it, didn't own any other guns, and kept it in a safe at home.

:D:D:D

PS: The dark haired on with the dark blouse behind the sign is pretty cute. I opened the magnifier for a closer look.

Yes.

Somewhat seriously. Are there any known problems with the Shield? I've been wrestling with the idea of buying one, just because.
Being in MA, I have to figure in about $100.00 or so on top of the selling price for a replacement (reasonable pull) trigger. A few used ones have popped up recently with the trigger modification done, but I'm still on the fence.

The $100.00 MA "tax" on S&W M&P products is a real bummer. :( I feel your pain. You should come with me to the range someday and try mine... just to see if you can live with the stock 27-1/2 pound MA trigger. :(

It's for the children after all.

I had an M&P9c with trigger work done by Greg Derr. It shot well and the trigger was fine. I bought that used from the original owner at a reasonable price. THENNNNNNN, I found a lightly used (college PD) 6906, which was everything the M&P was and a 3rd Gen. Bought that, sold the M&P, never looked back. Still, a Shield wouldn't be a bad gun to have if the trigger pull wasn't required to be 10.5 pounds per MA law.

3 Options...

1) Swallow hard and pay the "tax", or
2) Find a used free state model somewhere... somehow, or,
3) Buy one off a LEO (or maybe qualify yourself for a blue label?).

I feel your pain... but remember: If you want a very compact plastic 9mm without having to pay the MA "tax", consider an LC9s. It's no Shield, but it's a pretty good substitute at a whopping savings for us subjects of Massachusetts. :o

What is this $100 tax?

TTSH is referring to the $100.00 or so that is required to make the trigger useable. MA state law requires handguns to have a minimum trigger pull of #10.5 (I think). It does not require the purchaser to keep the trigger pull at that level, and there are kits to reduce it to a more reasonable level. With installation those kits come to about $100.00 or so.
