357 or 44...which one?

Thanks for all the help! I think I'm going with the 44!

My prediction: you won't regret it.

A 44 magnum slug will stop anything a 357 magnum slug will, but you can't say the opposite is necessarily true.

If 6 of those big hot 44 magnum slugs won't get the job done then a couple of more rounds of the smaller 357s aren't going to help much either - as long as you aren't in a gunfight with multiple assailants.

Thanks! Yeah....I agree. Nice to know that I can stop a fairly large animal if it decides to eat me.

Plus, the .44 is a little better with a shot shell for snakes and such. Not much, but a few more pellets helps in a pistol caliber shot shell.
Very close range at best.

.357 all day long, unless you're Dirty Harry the .44 will probably miss it's target. Your mileage may vary.

I agree, but...my main reason for carrying would be animal defense, but I want it to be a good choice for BGs too.

Why carry a .357 magnum when you can carry pretty much the same gun in .44 magnum. Of course take my opinion for what it is worth, which ain't much according to some. I kind of prefer N frames in calibers that start with forty.

Thanks Bill. I was just wondering that with this short of a barrel, the effectiveness of the two calibers would be close enough that the extra two rounds would be a consideration.

which ever one you choose, use the heaviest bullets you can find which will be effected less by the short barrel length. So at least 180's in the .357 and 300's in the .44mag

Blackgun, I agree with your choice of the 44. Your other two choices seem quite wise and give you lots of variety given the crazy limits of CA.

The 44, IMO, offers the most versatility given your other choices. If you feel you need more than 6 shots, carry your 938 in a pocket as a "NY reload". If NY allows a second gun, surely Cali would as well. :D

BTW, that 629 is gorgeous!

COMPROMISE SUX

It seems you can't possibly get the best of both worlds. I believe in specific guns for specific purposes. Your lawmakers seem to be putting some mileage on their MJ cards. Out in the boonies/mtn's you can't open carry? Are you hunting when out there? When I think of CC, 44 mags & 8 shot 357's don't leap to mind, but it's a shorts & Tee shirt world here. It's been my feeling that if a hot loaded 180 gr 357 is too small/underpowered then it's time for a BIG rifle or shotgun. I can't imagine being in griz country where they are A REAL THREAT (not one was spotted here 20 years ago) without a rifle.

Yeah...I agree. There isn't a one gun for everything out there. Hot hunting...just camping and hiking...taking my dog out on the trail. Yeah...not the first two guns that come to mind either, but I can conceal either of them in a t-shirt and shorts.
