I went to remove the rear sear housing block and this piece fell out before I could see how it was positioned. Can anyone show me how to replace it. Thanks!

California gun?

Yes it is.

Is the magazine safety lever still in place?

If so, then the part you show goes right in the center, between the spring sections, and under the seer. It interacts with the magazine safety to allow the trigger to actuate the seer.

I can take a picture tomorrow if you don't solve the problem.

I just took another look at your picture and see that the magazine safety lever is in place. Your part goes on the same shaft as the springs in your picture.

Ya I think a picture would be helpful. I tried putting the piece between the springs under the support facing right but the trigger wouldn't hit and I couldn't get the slide off. I had to take the rear slide cover off and remove the spring to free up the slide. Once I see a picture I'll know how it goes.

Tomorrow.

This came up last year for another California guy. You may find the post if you do a search. I'm pretty sure that lever interacts with the magazine safety lever. Also, FYI, be sure to follow the special instructions in the manual about takedown.

Later, when your gun is working, you will have to lift up the magazine safety lever to see the trigger actuate the seer. Be sure to push if back down again before replacing the slide. As to why the special procedure, never got a direct answer from S&W. It doesn't seem to add any clearance when taking the slide off. S&W answer = It's strong and won't break anything, whatever that means.

I bought a California version because I like the safety features.

This is how I have the part in the pistol. However, it won't fire and requires the rear plate cover to be removed and slide spring removed to remove the slide.

Here's a quick video clip showing the movement in the sear housing.

Looks about right. The "flags" on both parts are to the right when looking at the gun from the rear.

Lift the magazine safety lever all the way up and the linkage will engage. If the magazine were in the linkage would work as it's supposed. Just hold it up manually while the gun is apart to see how the linkage works.

Actually I just did a quick test, putting a magazine in with the slide off. The linkage works just fine. The problem is that if you watch one of the Apex showing how to install some modified parts in that area the sear moves, but not so in CA guns. It needs that lever fully up for the linkage to engage.

The magazine safety lever is supposed to be pushed down before breaking down the gun, but is fully up when a magazine is in the assembled weapon. Lack of a magazine disconnects the trigger bar linkage system.

Again, no idea why the lever is supposed to be down before removing the slide, but that's what S&W says, but still no reason. Maybe you can call and ask why.

One of your pictures includes a view of the trigger spring. Does it have an oiled felt damper inside the spring? If not, try to get one.

I just looked at mine and you don't see the felt unless you look at the spring from further back. You probably do have it but be sure to check.

If I were to take pictures they would be identical to what you see. I suspect that with the magazine safety lever the way it is, pulling the trigger just causes a part to over-ride the sear. Push that magazine safety lever all the way up and you will see that it works just fine.

I had to take the sear housing block out to install the spring kit and new trigger.

Juana from Apex has been emailing me some support as well. He has advised me to sand down the rear of the trigger a bit. I will do that when I get home and see where we're at.

Thanks for all the help, I hope to get this figured out so I can go to the range tomorrow.

I just found an old email from Apex, November, 2014 from Scott Folk, as follows:

Hi Don,

You may need a magazine in to make your trigger work properly. It likely has a magazine release installed from the factory.

In his note, "Magazine Release" should have been "Magazine Safety Lever". I had already discovered the magazine safety issue when I got the note and just now found the email on this computer.

I had forgotten that note but remembered from long ago that the magazine safety lever had to be full up for the trigger bar link to work.

He indicated somewhere along the way that they planned on doing another install video for California Guns. Probably wasn't worth the effort at the time.

I am not doing any mods to my gun, it works just fine.

I do appreciate the California version, that was reliability tested, drop tested, and otherwise tested to be on the CA roster. I can't understand why some folks have objected so loudly about the tactile round-in-chamber indicator, works fine and is useful if you really do have to pick up your gun in the dark.

I did buy a couple of the full-capacity magazines since they are allowed in this state. Useful when going to the range.

Bass pro shop here had to change their rules to get me the CA version. I had bought a standard gun here but Bass pro took it back and did a special order for the replacement, at the same time matching a mail-order price. I think I did well.

I believe the factory suggested price is $20 higher for the CA version but I didn't pay extra, actually got a significant discount for opening a Bass credit card.

Remove Rear Cover Plate?

You probably didn't intend to say that the rear cover plate has to be removed to remove the slide, I think you perhaps meant to install the sear block components.

Thanks for all your help ou1954.

Once I figured out the proper placement for the Mag Disconnect Safety I had to increase the over travel by sanding down the trigger. It appears to be striking consistently now. I'm going to take it to the range tomorrow and see how it does.
