Have done some searching but would still like some help please.
I would like to buy a budget (less than 150) red dot scope for my Sport 2.
Looking for some help on what to buy what mounts etc.
Use of the rifle will be recreaction under 300 yards, mostly around 50, as well as home defense. Thanks in advance

Honestly for over 100 yards I'll recommend a scope, at least for me a red dot is just not practical for distance shooting. I have the Nikon 223 carbine and I love it.

More interested in the under 100 yards mostly. For longer distances I have several bolt action rifles

I have the Vortex Sparc II, I got it for 155.00 on ebay. It was listed for 199.00 buy now or best offer. I offered 155.00 and they took it. I wish I had offered less to see how low they would go.

bw24, I think he meant this:

AR-15 & AK-47 Parts & Accessories | Primary Arms

I just ordered this red dot up for $82.00 with free shipping at Amazon:

Bushnell - TRS-25 HiRise

Plan on putting it on an M&P Sport II. Comes with a 1 inch riser mount that will give you a one third co-witness with your iron sight. Haven't read many bad reviews about it and it's well under your budget. Supposed to get here next week.

Since your criteria is both recreation and self defense, there are no dime store optics suitable. If it was just for recreation then I'd suggest looking at primary arms microdot and Bushnell trs25.

Get an Aimpoint and be done with it.

The Lucid HD7 genlll is another good choice for the AR. I have one on my Sport and it is excellent quality and comes with the proper mount for a one third co-witness. It also runs on a standard AAA battery.

Like Phil said, budget and self defense typically don't go together. Even Marshal, the owner of Primary Arms, doesn't recommend their optics for duty type use.

What does that really mean though? Is a Primary Arms red dot going to automatically die if something goes bump in the night? No, no more than a Colt AR is going to protect you better than your S&W Sport. However, there is more risk involved with the budget optic.

Budget optics typically do not offer the same battery life as an Aimpoint with the exception of the Primary Arms MD-ADS (theoretical, not proven). So a drawback to a budget optic is that you can't leave it on. Messing with the red dot to turn on and get a useable brightness level under stress may not be that easy.

Budget optics are also more prone to quit working when being bounced around. If this is rifle is going to sit in the safe, this may not be a concern... but if it is going to be a "trunk gun" in case "SHTF", or a patrol rifle for an officer, the higher priced optic has less failure rate from this type of treatment.

With all that being said, Eotech was a praised, higher priced optic and now everyone is sending them in for a refund... so, take a look at you can afford, what your realistic use is, and decide from there.

For myself, I am about to go with one of the Primary Arms MD-ADS. With the longer battery life and clearer glass, I see it as an upgrade from what I am currently using. My AR is not my primary defensive weapon, but if the battery in the red dot lasts more than a year, and I replace it every year, it would more than likely meet my needs. And truth be told, the user forgetting to change the battery is probably the weak link in both the Primary Arms and the Aim Point.

+1 on Aimpoint. Buy once, cry once.
If I'm defending my life or my family's lives, you better believe I want something proven. I'm not saying that PA or anybody is a bad company, but I'm saying they are not "duty" trusted.

Are the primary arms classic or reflex sight as good as the micro dot ķinds

less than $150 and less than 100 yards? Vortex StrikeFire

+1. The StrikeFire II is a really great red/green dot for the money, and if you decide you need some light magnification later you can add a Vortex VMX-3T flip-to-side 3x magnifier in front of it down the line.

You can add a magnifier to most red dots, but I would go with a 1 to 4 variable power scope instead of a red dot with a magnifier...

Yep, obviously there are many options, for a sub-100 yard rifle though I would go with the red dot + magnifier (if you even need a magnifier, I only mentioned the VMX-3T because it has a nice solid lock-up for the money), also makes using the iron sights with co-witness easier vs a scope IMO.
