Hey people,

So I have about 600 rounds through my used shield and today, the very first misfire which a FTE. What's really got me in the air is, the load that jammed was my carry load. Hornady 115 JHP blue box, I just decided to shoot what was already in there before I went on to my target load. I haven't shot it in about 3 months, it was a little dry, but nothing major.

I'm thinking I should shoot a couple of boxes of that hornady and see what happens.

Not saying it was your issue but my son has managed to stovepipe my shield from a weaker grip. He is 10 and is doing much better after some practice. I have had no issues when I fire it even trying to limp wrist it. I have to remind my son to lock his arms out or it will malfunction on him.

I'd say yes you should definitely do that after you clean it up and look it over. I'd also suggest what bassgunner said, and make sure you have a solid grip on it. I'm at 1000 with no problems, but if yours was used, you may not even have an idea how many rounds went through it before it was yours.

It's always a good practice to shoot carry guns using the carry load periodically.

How many rounds is enough...how often?

For me, once I have reached the 200+ round with the carry load, the rounds in the three mags (what I normally have loaded) I have loaded get fired and then the mags are rotated (assuming you have more you trust). I TRY to do this twice a year.

Just my EDC weapon routine...from WAY back...

I too have purposely tried to limp wrist and never had a misfire. I dont think thats the problem. I'm a pretty solidly built with a firm grip.

First rule of SD ammo - test it, a lot, before you carry it. I carry what all my firearms will shoot, so I don't get caught with the wrong ammo in a crunch.

I passed on a lot of name brands / weights before I found one that they all liked.

I had a couple of FTE's in the first 50-75 rounds of using my shield 9 (I bought mine new) cleaned it really thoroughly and carefully oiled all touch points very lightly. 500 rounds later ...zero issues and I've fired 3 different HP's through it and 3 different range rounds. Now when I clean and oil it I am just more attentive to detail to make sure all is good.

That's what I keep reading, not just here, but every time I google FTE. The gun wasn't very dirty though, just a little dry. So how does the gun pass the torture test, where they dip it in mud than fire it, but just a little dryness or dirt cause a misfire?

I wouldn't over think it. one FTE wouldn't really alarm me, if it was a consistent problem? that's another story. Like I mentioned , I had a couple early on ...none since. I'm hoping I'm in the clear. I've been shooting Federal Personal defense 124 HP's , you might want to give those a try.
So far so good, my range rounds have all been 115 though, so I can't wait to get to the range and give these a go.

Of course the other way to look at this is how important it is to also practice malfunction drills. The failure of any kind may never happen but will you be ready if it does?

Recommend you successfully run at least 100 rounds of a given self defense round, without a single malfunction, BEFORE you start carrying it.

I recommend either Speer Gold Dot 124 JHP, or Federal HST 124 JHP.

They are WAY cheaper when you buy the 50 round "LE" box. Here is one source:

9mm 9x19 Ammo 124gr HST JHP Federal Premium (P9HST1) 50 Round Box - AmmunitionStore.com

And ditto on the malfunction drills. Best bet is to find a local gun shop or range that does "Basic Pistol" classes and take the class.

Update

It's the hollow points. Went to the range again today, shot 50 hornady JHP and 50 tula steel FMJ. The tula shot fine and the hornady, every time I loaded a new mag, the slide didn't fully return to battery, stopped just before, I had to push it in and 2 FTE.

Edit: the return to battery issue might be from me leaving hand on the slide.
