Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum and need some advice. The last couple years I've noticed prices for older pinned and recessed models have been going up. The last couple months in particular I've seen pretty outrageous prices for model 27-2's and 29-2's. The pre guns even more so. I have three model 27-2's, a 3.5 inch blued, a 6 inch blued both in mint condition and a 4 inch nickel with original box and paperwork. I have listed them locally and nationally for sale and received many offers. I'm thinking about selling them to get a Mint 6 inch nickel Colt Python with original box that my buddy is selling for $2500 because he needs the money.

Am I making a good decision to sell these 27-2's and get the Python or should I hold onto them? I don't want to experience sellers remorse because I know these are fantastic guns. Hickok45 just a couple days ago came out with a video discussing how they've become collectibles now and it made me reconsider.

Look forward to hearing advice from those that have Pythons.

Thanks for all the quick responses. This forum is awesome. The 27's are really nice guns and ultimately I think I'll regret parting with one of them. It's amazing to see prices on old Smiths going up, it makes me appreciate the effort and detail that went into making them. I wish smith would make them that way again even if it means paying a premium for handcrafted work instead of machines and mim.

Have owned several Pythons...don't any more

Like any self-respecting wheelgunner, I've tried Ruger and Colt before settling on S&W and only S&W. Be it a K, an L or an N frame, neither of the other two manufacturers can compare. Period! I too have a 3.5" 27-2 and a 6" 27-2 and have owned MANY others over the years along with scads of other Smiths. Now, I too got entranced with the claims of phenomenal accuracy that Python cretins have so liberally spread over the years (shamelessly I might add), but instead of just buying a Python, or butchering up a Smolt/Smython, I had built by Bowen a custom K-38 with a tight 1 in 14" twist barrel. This gave me the legendary accuracy of the Python and all the other great features of a S&W. Problem solved.

Do yourself a favor. Ditch the Python idea and stick with the Cadillac of 357 Magnum revolvers...the Model 27.

My first new duty gun was a Trooper, a field grade rendition of the snake w/o the vent rib and high gloss. Perhaps it can be refined beyond the 27-28 guns, but not by much. In my experience, and shooting a lot, mine required repairs and parts replacements. Being stationed in the hinterlands, I finagled a 28 and found it much more durable, and actually liked it better.

I haven't followed the Python market closely, but things like that tend to level off. There are no more 27s either, at least not like the ones you have.

For investment, I'm not sure. For using, you have the best.

When TXDPS went to pistols, we were priveledged to buy the revolvers at what the dealer allowed. I bought my issue pre-27 and 28-2. I'm set! The non-registered .357 turns 75 this year. B E A U T I F U L !

My 2c.....

My advice, for what it is worth, is to keep your 27s, and forget about the Python.

I am more a shooter than a collector. Virtually all of my handguns hit the range ... I can't see spending money on a gun that won't be shot. I started pistol shooting as a bullseye shooter. I gradually expanded into IHMSA, and PPC in addition to NRA 2700 3 gun bullseye matches. I believe that a round or two of IDPA may be on the horizon.

My long time, and now long departed gunsmith always admonished that a S&W will always hold a trigger job better than a Colt. When I purchased my Trooper MKIII from him, he did his best to swing me to a S&W Model 28, but I didn't (in retrospect, can the class now say "Fool").

In my opinion, the Python is a pretty looking upgrade from the Officer's Match Target, but a gun is made to be shot, not admired under glass!

I'm not qualified to speak to this. I sold all my Pythons (and King Cobra, etc) and bought S&W's.
+1 (other than 1 old 2" Lawman Mk3 I still have and is for sale or trade to someone with a nice N frame, etc.) :)
My only regret is that I don't have more to sell, especially with some of the absurd prices you see on them (colts) now.

Don't sell anything. Work out a payment plan with your friend if you want the Colt.

I have been collecting pythons and pinned smiths [since the 70s] as in 27-2s and 29-2s. Some are shooters and some are still new in the box. I think pythons are a better Investment and both are tops as far as quality. that 6in python you speak of is about a $3,500.00 gun or more.[I sold one 3yrs ago like it for that price]. I would try to buy the python that's a good price IMO. and keep the smiths for the time being.[they all keep going up]....................................M*
