That was the last wheel gun and last Smith model issued to the troopers - they went to Glock in 1990.

That is a 2 1/2" barrel that was not offered when new but should have been. My local Gunsmith made it happen. I supplied a 2 1/2" 686 barrel and he worked down the top contour and front sight to 681 specs. It was bead blasted on the top surface to original appearance and is undectectable as not being a S&W offering.
 
The collection grew one more last night. A few other views of the others.
