Prior to joining this forum I recently picked up my first two S&W revolvers, 617 in 22 lr and a 686 in 357. Been great shooters so far at the range with a couple different brands of ammo, look forward to taking one of them up north this fall. Thought I was going to get a semi with the third permit but find myself considering another wheel gun after getting these two lol.

Two excellent choices! I know all about the qualities of the 686 but have never had a 617. I've read many threads here on the forum that they are superb shooters.

Interesting comment about a permit. In NJ do you have to apply for a permit and specify what type of gun you will buy prior to actually buying it?

You don't have to specify what type of pistol. However here in NJ (New Germany), you have to fill out the initial application, get finger printed if needed, pay all appropriate fees, then if your lucky you might get approved and get the call that your permits are in before 6-8 months after all checks are completed. Then when you do get them you can only purchase one pistol every thirty days, if you have multiple permits. You can apply for several permits at one time and once approved use for any caliber pistol as long as it's legal here in NJ. And if that process wasn't insult enough you get charged a NICS fee each time you purchase a pistol/long gun which again is another check after you have already been checked. I've been lucky in my area in which I have to use the state police, and usually get them around two months or so but I know many others who have to wait a long time. All depends if it's a local twp, county, or state PD up here and they are not all for gun rights.

Wow. Move to Vermont no permits buy as many as you like open or concealed Carry no magazine restrictions.

Wish I could my friend, some day I plan to move. VT wouldn't be bad since I also hunt in Maine.

Have no problem with a check being done but if you include our NJ firearms ID card, which you also have to have which is another check, you really are checked three times before a purchase can be made, total nonsense.
