I made a dumb mistake. Loaded 9mm rounds into a 40/.357 magazine. First round shot fine. 2nd was a stove pipe FTE and the case had a longitudinal split. I figured it was a defective round. Next was a FTF and I finally figured out my mistake. How dangerous a situation was this?

Obviously I am going to mark my magazines better.

I believe a.round could have slipped past the extractor and plugged the barrel allowing another round to chamber on top of it. That would have been catastrophic, likely blowing up the barrel and part of the frame. Other than that, I can't think of other possibilities that would be worse than what happened. Glad you're okay.

Sounds like nobody got hurt and bonus, you learned from your mistake.
Move forward, you've already learned to be more careful in the future.

My father-in-law mixed up some 40's and 45's not long ago. The first two were 45's. The third round was a 40. It went bang but was definitely an unusual sound, more like a shotgun than a pistol. I immediately told him to stop. Turns out the front half of the case expanded to the size of the chamber and was stuck. I stripped it down and using a pencil pushed the case out of the chamber. Live and learn.

Cousin had a p228 (9mm), I gave him my p229 (.40) to shoot, he wanted to feel the difference....side by side. We went to the indoor range, we got two lanes. I'm getting set up, I see cousin talking to the range officer. I hear a funny sounding shot. Yup, not knowing which went where, he saw I was busy, he asked the range officer who was standing right next to him....who proceeded to show him...how to load a 9mm magazine into a .40 caliber gun. I had a little chat with the RO...then I didn't see him the rest of the night. Long story short, no harm no foul. Made for an interesting fire formed case. as said, mistakes will be made, learn & move on.

A fine lesson, you should never be so complacent as to allow this to happen-- learn from it.

With that said, pressure is what does the evil deeds. If the wrong round is too small and is not fully contained by the chamber, it will never reach it's intended pressure. If something got lodged and you fired a live round behind it, you are in BIG trouble. But a small round that is not wholly contained? Not much of a "danger" or safety threat.

As a positive spin to this i believe that the 40 mags work in the 9 when loaded with 9 and the 9 mags in the 40 loaded with 40.

Grabbing the wrong mag isnt so bad but the wrong mag and ammo can be.
