Health and Fitness Thread

Late to the party on this one. I've lost almost 25 pounds since February using the MyFitnessPal app to log my calories and using a simple "eat fewer calories than I burn" approach. I eat whatever I want, just within my calorie target. To make this work, you need to know how many calories you need each day to maintain your weight, aka Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) and then eat less. Here's a calculator to do this.

Now that I'm retired, I go to the gym every morning and spend an hour on a treadmill. Usually I run for at least 30 minutes at an elevation of 3 and an 8:20 mile pace and then the remainder of the hour at full elevation and at a 13:00 mile pace. This and eating 1500 net calories a day, I've lost almost 25 pounds since February.

I've never used MyFitnessPal, but it is related to UnderArmor's MapMyWalk which I've been using for a year. Does MyFitnessPal track your calorie burn or does it aggregate data from other apps like MapMyWalk to estimate caloric burn?

I guess I shouldn't feel too guilty.
The scale at the Y said I was still at 174 pounds.

When we got home, we mowed the lawn.
Then I felt compelled to fire up the grill.
Actually, my wife had purchased some pork rib meat and she was the one compelling me to grill it.
She mixed up some perfectly spiced BBQ sauce and I fired up the grill.
Of course when one's grilling meat there hasta be some beer involved. I managed to keep it down to two Bud light's.
A cigar just seemed to go with it.
Yup, grilling meat, drinkin' beer and smoking a cigar on a beautiful sunny summer day. What's not to like?

Tomorrow, I'm planning a nice hike while my wife's at work.
When she gets home we'll have another nice hike together.
There's a trail I want to check out.
I have this cool GPS watch, so.....

100 degrees today with a feels like of much higher but I am pretty sure that I at least sweated a little off if I didn't burn more than I took in! Been working on reducing portion size of things that I like but that are easy to over eat. Think that eating everything on my plate comes from the starving kids I was told about as a child!

I added the MyFitnessPal calorie counter app to my weight loss arsenal last night. I'm also sticking with logging my food in my Fat Book paper log on the kitchen counter. The Google Fit and MapMyWalk apps I've been using have been a work in progress and I'll see how MyFitnessPal works into the mix. They all work with each other. The way I figure it, the more time I spend messing with apps the less time I have to eat. :o I got in another 10.8 miles of walking yesterday, I've also been doing 15 to 20 minutes a day on an upper body weight/resistance machine, as well as a 10 to 20 minutes on an elliptical machine. The elliptical works my legs in a different way than walking and cuts down on joint and muscle pain. I guess it adds a bit of stretch and flex. I'm going to try for another full 10 miles plus today, I'll just see how I feel and go with the flow. I have a social function to go to this evening, I'll save 500 calories for that, I hope. Have a great day!

I've eaten my granola bar breakfast and my meds are kicking in.
I'm gonna use my GPS watch and see if I can get a distance hiked.
Then I'll use it again when my wife gets home and we go on a hike together.
I've already learned that my maximum elevation change it 407 feet.
Today's also a weigh in day.

In addition to weight loss, I discovered medical grade non-prescription compression socks (dress and sport). For a person like myself, on his feet 16 hours/day, they are a blessing! No more leg pain, muscle fatigue or edema. I feel 20 years younger.

On today's exploratory hike. The trail was easily followed. It looked like an old access road. Sections were badly eroded and grown over with dead fall across it. Looked like it hasn't been used in many years.
After following it for a coupla miles, we came to a large tree which had fallen across the trail, blocking it. I bushwacked my way around it and looked down trail.
Then I turned around and told my wife we're going back.
When I came around the fallen tree, I could see a coupla black bears a little ways off. They looked like youngsters and I had no intention of messing with a mama bear.
And there I was with no camera.

Can't believe you didn't have a camera Snubby! Good idea to turn around though. Long hot 100 degree plus day today and I think I may be starving a little too much, blood sugar was down to 71 when I checked before lunch but came back to 82 before dinner. Drinking a lot of water, wonder about the effect of sweating heavy on my levels.

That's the thing, it always seems like the cool stuff happens when the camera's at home.

For no particular reason, I'm going to take a rest day today. I'm up, had breakfast, and feel fine, I just decided I'm going to surprise my body and not take it for a 5 to 8 mile walk this morning. I do not even have any errands that I need to walk to accomplish today. I'm going to stick to the 1,600 calorie diet, hydrate, maybe do a light workout at the gym, and simply take it easy today.

I'm still learning how to use MyFitnessPal and integrate it into the other fitness tracking apps I use, but it is proving to be useful.

In West Virginia you go into the woods without a camera you will see bears. In Texas you go into the woods without a gun and you will see wild hogs. Strange how that works.

Good results on my blood sugar this morning! First time under 100 (92)! Going to get more data for where it is going during the day before I change when and what I eat.
