If you could only have 1 J frame, what would it be?

S&W 638 Its lightweight, has a shrouded hammer but you are still able to be thumb cock it if wanted, you can carry it in your pocket without a holster, & loaded with Buffalo bore 38 spl 158 SWC lead ammo. I carry this more than the G26 because you can almost forget you are carrying it. Add a speed loader in the mix, great reliable shooter.

It would be a coin toss for me. My two favorites are the M&P 340, and the early 640-1.

The tried and true 640-1 is my first choice in J-frame. The 640-1 and 3" K frame 13-2 and are my "go everywhere" small revolvers. But you can't have just one so my other J's are the 63, 640, 642 and (future) M&P340.

this is very interesting what all of you guys like to have as your last ditch gun. Lets face it, we cant carry every one of our J frames when we leave the house so i look at it this way;

Which ever J frame (or other gun for that matter, but we are talking about guys that primarily carry a J frame here) you take with you when you leave your safe place is the gun you would more than likely take/grab if the shtf in my opinion or would have on you when a situation happened, whether it be at home or while you are out and about.

Keep em coming...

I'm a J-hound, I own 20 J Frames (I think ;)) from Baby Chief to 60-15 Pro, Centennials and Bodyguards. Been pondering a response since the thread started.

The one that gets the most carry time is my 638, and it looks it.

My vote for an all steel would be the 60-14 or 649-5.

1 7/8" 36ND or a 649-2.

I prefer a hammer, but understand the need to shoot from a pocket, so the 649-2 is it for me.

If I could have only one, it would probably be my 442. There are other's I like way better, shoot way better, make a lot more sense when ticking off reasons... but realistically... that 442 sits in a convenient but safe place, in a nylon clip-on holster loaded with 135gr GDHP's, and inevitably gets grabbed on the way out the door when I think:
"I'll be gone 10 minutes tops to get some milk. I don't need to carry anything and besides I'm in a hurry. I don't want to hassle with changing my belt, threading a holster on, chambering a round, etc... I just want to be done running around for the day and watch some TV."
That 442 is probably more likely to be there to save my bacon some day than the 4" 19 I rarely carry (but would if such and such and this and that were called for).
442 for me. Had I bought a 642, or 638 that particular day, same difference to me.

These are my three faves! J, L, and N frames! 44 mags kick real good too! Can't beat em for accuracy!

I do have only one J-frame, and I am perfectly happy with it.

It's a 640 no-dash, .38 Special, an early one manufactured in 1990 as one of a special group of 5,000 factory-etched "TESTED FOR +P+". I've pocket-carried it daily for years as my primary and only carry gun, though I've considered getting a Ruger LCP for a hip-pocket backup.

No, I've never shot +P+ ammo in the 640 and have no interest in doing so. I carry a standard pressure equivalent of the old FBI load.
