How to find out when my S&W was produced

I have a Model 36 bearing the serial number 06765, can anyone tell me what year this would of been manufactured? Thanks

Welcome to the forum. I don't have my "Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson" handy right now but it is a superb reference book that you should consider getting. There is a new 4th edition available now. However, I'm sure someone will be along soon to help you date your model 36.

I suspect you found that number in the yoke area. If so, it is not the serial number. I'm not aware of any Chiefs Special revolvers having serial numbers that begin with a zero. Besides that, no Model 36 revolvers were made in 1952. The Chiefs Special was made at that time but the Model 36 started shipping in 1958.

Look on the bottom of the grip frame (butt) to see the correct serial number.

Welcome! We need the full information from the flat bottom of the grip frame, including any letters. You may see just digits, or digits plus one to three letters.

Those are the letters and numbers from the bottom of the grip frame, on the 4 inch when you open the cylinder it has 6x4x2x with an E3 stamped below it, on the 2 inch sorry on the serial number it is actually M259xx and when you open the cylinder there is this number 92017

M259XX is from 1969-1971, most likely 1971, and M978XX is from 1973-1977, most likely 1977. Others have better information that we can get from the SCSW, and they might be along here in a bit . . . Love the 34.

The standard reference material most everyone uses (The Standard Catalog of S&W) indicates that your serial# falls between 1962-1969

1962 295000
1969 786544

If I had to make a guess It would be in the 1964ish area.

No later than 1947, based on the features illustrated. The stocks are not original.

If you supply the numbers stamped on the butt (including any letters) we can nail that down tighter for you.

Looks like from the 1900-1930s MP with after market stocks and reblued. But, need way more information to pin it down closer. Serial number even if you xx last 2 numbers, Caliper markings. Description of any markings on barrel. Probably worth about $250

It seems that when you try to buy parts for this gun, they ask if it is a MIM gun, and that some are and some are not, but can be identified by the mfg date.
That is why I was asking.

It is British Service Revolver, made in 1942. Note: it was not originally chambered for the .38 Special. Rather, it came from the factory chambered for the .38 S&W, which is shorter and slightly fatter. If a .38 Special round will fit all the way into the charge holes in the cylinder, it has been reamed. If you look on the side of the barrel, it should say 38 S&W CTG.
