I need advise from you experienced M&P 9C owners. I have a very weak or non positive thumb safety. I want a safety but I want one that is safe. Does anyone know how to make an adjustment that will stiffen or tighten the safety?

M&P safety

I like a carry gun w a thumb safety, got a 9c, have never seen a worse thumb safety. If s&w had made it like the shield or bg safety, no problem, but those bat wings on the regular m&p's are awful. Too big, too easy too activate, took mine out, it's easy, s&w sent me plugs to fill the holes(free).

The size of the levers can be reshaped to suit ones preferences but to make the detent more positive you will have to remove the sear block housing with lever. On the left end of the lever you will find the notches that the detent and spring engage. You can slightly reshape these notches with a file, it's not how deep the notches are but rather how steep the the sides of the slope are. Make them more "U" shaped rather than"V" shaped. Go slow and retry as you go. Just pin it to the block without installing it in the gun and you will be able to feel your changes. If you go too far new levers are available from Speed Shooters for ten dollars.

I have a FS 9mm and a 9c, both with a thumb safety. The safety on the FS is somewhat more positive than the 9c, but not as positive as a 1911. IMO the safety on the 9c could easily be accidentally disengaged. The FS safety is a little better but still requires careful handling.

I had been thinking about getting a new 9c with a thumb safety, but this old thread is giving me doubts.

I purchased an M&Pc because it had a thumb safety, one of the reasons I sold it because the safety would dissengage In the holster. It can be modified but I decided to sell it and did not want to modify a gun I was selling.

I believe a poorly designed safety is worse than no safety.

I feel the same way!

My FS M&P 9 just came back from the factory today after I sent it in asking if they could check it to see if the TS could be made stiffer or if not I would rather not even have the safety.

It came back today with the safety removed and the frame holes plugged.

I am very pleased that they did that for me.

As mentioned above, it's very easy to increase the safety tension by filing lightly and carefully with a needle file in the "V" gap on the safety lever.
It's also stupid-simple to install, or remove the safety entirely. There's zero reason to waste the time and money sending it back to S&W for this.
But, as was also pointed out already, S&W really dropped the ball on this weak, floppy safety design. It's an easy, inexpensive fix, and they have to be well aware of it by now. They should be sending out for free a properly cut safety lever to any customer that calls and asks for one. S&W not addressing this seems like a lazy, incompetent middle finger to their customer base.

They told me I need to send it in so they could look at it the rep also said if I removed it myself it may or may not void my warrantee, No way I am taking a chance at doing that.

Apparently they did not mind wasting their "time and money" having me send it in for them to look at it for them to decide what to do with it, their advice was to send it in to them... so that is what I did !

This thread is making me reconsider the 9c... I want a safety on my EDC. I guess i may have to grab a shield instead

Well, sure, if they're footing the shipping both ways, then obviously there's no downside there. My M&P9L was bought 2nd hand, so I don't believe they were gonna send me a shipping label, and since the job really is too simple to screw up, I just ordered the safety parts I wanted to install (less $$ than paying shipping to S&W), filed the gap a little, and put it all in myself. Still less trouble than boxing it up, taking it to Fed-ex, and waiting a couple weeks to get it back.
But, whatever works. :)

They didn't charge me for anything including the shipping both ways, It was gone a day or so short of two weeks, I have other guns to keep me company so no biggie with it being gone for two weeks, S&W really stands behind their Gun's.

The thumb safety is completely superfluous on an M&P. All it does is block trigger movement. If you have the gun in a proper holster, one that covers the trigger, then it is no more safe with the thumb safety than without it.

To remove the thumb safety because it's too easy to switch off is just crazy. That's like saying your spare tire isn't black so you left it at home.

From the amount of people that have posted about removing their TS there are a lot of us off our rockers ...lol
