New .40 Shield Jamming

The only way you can determine whether or not your cleaning made a difference would be to try the same ammo after you cleaned it. Otherwise just stick to what you found to be successful and you will probably be successful in the future.

My shield .40 has been flawless. But did have a 6rd mag that was hard to load but ran fine. Stripped it down & found there was a hook on the mag spring that came out of the follower. Most of my mags on other pistols don't hook around the follower even my full size M&P 45. Shot it today & had no malfunctions , shot PMC 180gr & Federal American Eagle 155 gr fmj's.

.40 M&P Shield

I have the full size M&P. I just sent it back for repair. When I first bought it, it would jam every now and then. I thought I just needed to shoot more rounds. I took it back to the range a couple of more times. The last time I took it, I could barely shoot one round before it would jam. It was awful. I finally had to leave the range when I had a spent cartridge in the barrel and a live cartridge stuck behind it. I hope S&W can fix this.

I'm extremely disappointed with this gun. I wouldn't bet my life on this gun unless I could throw it at the assailant. If this gun comes back and has that problem again, I'm going to demand my money back. This is totally unacceptable for a major fire arms manufacturer. I have a Colt .45 Gold Cup and it shoots like a dream.

I shoot the Shield 40 and it has NEVER malfunctioned on me. Subcompact pistols are different to shoot than your Colt. The Shield is designed for concealed carry thus the grip is thin and short which can lead to gripping issues for some shooters.

Once you get it back from S&W, concentrate on your grip. You need a good firm grip, but not a death grip, about 60% support hand & 40% strong hand.

I know it's never made my problem list of unreliable weapons. My M&P 45 Shield has well over a thousand rounds through it, since early last summer. Not a single malfunction with many different types of factory ammunition & reloads. I consider my 9mm Shield as extremely reliable also. Since the 9 & 45 are SD guns, I give a lot of thought to their reliability.

Hi all, I wanted to thank you all for the comments and suggestions. I wanted to provide a quick update.

The other night I took the gun apart and inspected it for any imperfections or deformities on the barrel assembly. I could not find any and comparing it to my M&P 40 chamber, they looked very similar.

So, I again scrubbed the entire gun using hoppes 9. I did notice some type of residue in the chamber that was a bit difficult to remove. I used a brass brush to do this and it all came off.

I also re-lubed the gun entirely using frog lube. I did not have anything else worth using so I decided to give this a try. It has an interesting smell. Anyways, I put the gun together and took it to the range tonight.

I used the american eagle 165gr fmj ammo this time. I was able to run an entire 50rd box without a single failure this time. I did not have any of the original ammo left over to compare but I was pleased by the experience tonight.

Anyways, I feel 50rds is not good assurance but it looks promising. I will keep trying and see how it goes.

One thing I noticed is that the slide spring on my M&P .40 is much lighter than that on the shield. Other than that, I could not tell any other difference.

Hopefully I will be seeing what to do with the trigger as this is the MA compliant model and this gun is definitely stiff.

Good to hear, looks like U solved the problem. All of us owners need to know to break down an properly clean/lube/inspect and properly assembly our firearms before ever loading and cycling our new firearms. The dealer can help us with this most important maintenance. Stay safe always !

S&W repaired my M&P .40 CORE and I'll receive it tomorrow. They said they replaced the barrel. Good grief. We'll see how it goes.

Don't use hoppes....and get a better oil.

Try EWL. Extreme weapons lube. That hoppes stuff can turn too goo depending on what oil it sees next. Rem oil sucks.
