Here's the track I have on the model, pretty close to what rosefarm posted:
Smith & Wesson 686-5 Plus Mountain Gun 4-in barrel Revolver in .357 Mag. Blue Book of Gun Values (37th Edition) indicates between $650 in 95% condition and $850 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 53 recorded prices for this model gun from $475 to $1475 over a period of 13 Yrs 11 Mos ending December 22, 2016. The average price as of that date was $776. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $849. The last 10 prices I have for this model since 1/18/2013 range from $880 to $1475 averaging $1191.

I would have said at least 900 dollars and I bet they go for more on the auction sites. $1600 doesn't surprise me. A new 686+ has an MSRP of around $850, if you can find one. Call it a Mountain Gun and the price is going up, especially on line.
A 4" 686+ is ideal for woods packing, regular gun or Mountain Gun. A 3" is good, too. I used to carry my 2.5" 686+ when I was pig hunting. All good!

Wow! Mine has red post on patridge front sight.......Got it used......All the lazer etching is gone(CHEAP-CHEAP) as it gone on my 629 mtn gun....The 686 mtn gun and the 696 are the ONLY L frames I like.......
To me, that is the ideal 357 revolver! Best combination of size, weight, capacity. The factory action is really smooth, as is my 696 of the same era.
Very good indeed. 4" tapered barrel, RB, 7 shot L frame...
Dunno about current models but the -5 is an awesome piece IMO.

Got 3" 686+ but have not had it out yet. They are nice.
And has that great forged tapered one piece barrel........Not a thread spool with a bulbulous(sp?) outer sleeve....................
