Are forums dying and being replaced by facebook groups?

facebook, twitter, my space, etc,.....are foreign to me...........i have NO need to gossip over the back fence..............if i need to listen to dribble.....just turn on any news channel.....

That's how I think of all those social media sites. Let the Kardashians and the Jenners and the Wests and their ilk gossip all they want. It's of less than no concern of mine. All that want to go over to sites like that from decent forums like this...I say let em...and good riddance.

Damn...I think I'm becoming a curmudgeon:)

At this moment I'm logged into two forums that I regularly visit and post.

This board has 4145 users online this minute, the other has 4376. Probably not approaching FB numbers at a given time, but seems pretty healthy anyhow.

I figure these boards will be around for a while yet.

That's like 0.01% of Facebook. You guys pick that and run with it like that's what it's all about. It's simply your page and whatever you like. Just like your house. It's yours and filled with whatever you like. You want to follow Kardashians go for it.....Or.....You can use it every day and never see or hear of the Kardashians.

A very large weather site will eliminate their blogs at the end of the month .. so yes they are .. the site was just bought by a large corporation ..

Every one went either to Facebook private groups or to Flickr private groups and a few others also went to other sites ..

I think sites like this that have specific narrow topics talked about by people that use the item talked about will survive .. Jeep sites, 4X4 sites, gun makers sites like this and others, drag racing .. all item specific forums will go on !!

I just joined a Smith club on facebook. Seems like a good bunch of guys. I prefer here but some really cool guns show up on there sometime. Both places have there purpose.

My nephew is a junior high wrestler and is off to states soon. I was able to watch his matches on there. One of them live. He lives too far away to get to see him in person. Facebook is what you make of it. Its only a gossip place if you allow it. Just like here.:D

Specific interest forums (like this one) will most likely be around for a long time. Reason is ease of navigation, simplicity of the format and generally people starting or responding to specific topics as opposed to just BS which frankly most of what Facebook is used for. Facebook is way to difficult to navigate and that in itself is enough to keep people away as opposed to forums which are typically fairly easy to navigate, especially for the less computer savvy.

Facebook is popular with the younger crowd, and forums seem to hold us older fellers around more. Facebook is not friendly to many groups of people that don't agree with its owners, most forums are dedicated to one major subject and have enthusiasts that normally have much more experience.

I've seen a couple of good forums die due to Facebook. And then the Facebook pages died too.

Since Facebook is restrictive regarding firearms content, I seriously doubt that forums like this one will ever go away due to Facebook.

I have a FB page and a couple of hundred FB friends. I use it mainly as a way to stay in contact with my family who all live in different states.

Another old geezer who never really took to electronics. So you might say I'm electronically challenged. I prefer forums like this one as the boss keeps a pretty tight reign on bad words, being impolite and general rudeness. Sad to say that doesn't always happen on some other sites I frequent. Frank

I dont know if forums are dying? many were still-born to begin with. I know several from this site-who are there as well.

When I want opinions I go to facebook. When I want real facts I visit my favorite forums. I believe most serious folks can differ from the two and make their decision wisely.

In addition....

There are some heavy duty historians, writers, gunsmiths, collectors and more on this forum. Would they want to read and post on a 'blog'? Would you search out info on a facebook page and try to filter out the extraneous worthless comments?

now i'm curious. is there a way to find out how many members we had in former years?
is membership shrinking?
all i know is when i had a question about s&ws, this looked like the place to come n it was.
