Bought this 3.5 inch barrel pre 27 S/N 85xxx i'm guessing sometime in 1952 for production. once I replace the rear sight blade it will get used even more.

I looked at that one a few weeks ago. Someone put work into it. The lockup on it was really nice and the action smooth. The price was a bit more than I was able to spend at the time, but I was trying to justify it to myself anyway. When the seller swore to me that the ball detent in the crane was factory it soured me on the deal.

From what I saw, it'll be a heck of a shooter.

I didn't notice the ball detent in the crane until I started cleaning the gun. Factory or not as long as function is fine I'm happy.

We've got to have a few more photos of that shooter. And some of the cool features like the ball lock on the crane/yoke and a look at the rear sight to see what needs fixing. I have to tell you that 357s with a bunch of honest wear on them are some of my favorites.

Thanks,

Congratulations on the old workhorse! There is nothing wrong with honest worn guns. In my opinion, if you plan on adding more wear, they are the best ones to get as the price should reflect that. The key though is giving them a very good mechanical and functional exam just to make sure they got that way "honestly" and not from abuse. Most of you here seem to be on top of stuff like that though.

Just be thankful you S&W guys still have a level head and your honest shooter examples remain affordable and relatively unchanged due to that. Move to the 'other' brand, and they are in pipe dream heaven buying beat up, worn out shooters for $2K and will argue if you say anything in contrast. I would say that 90% of those guys have no clue what a revolver checklist is. It's a very sad time right now if you happen to like that 'other' brand. I've been visiting here much more often just so I can interact with sane folk.

That one has character. I like it.

Doesn't it put a burr under your saddle when some goober tries to tell you something like that ball-detent lock is "factory"? That would make me want to not do business with him but if the price was OK I'd probably bite on a 3.5" 1950s 357 Magnum too. (smile)

Dave T i will admit the character on this gun is what made me want to buy it so bad, I walked around the show all day with it on my mind and finally couldn't resist. Dealer never mentioned the ball detent. Maybe it needs the correct grips although these feel just right.
