1-Adam 12 1-Adam 12

It's on YouTube. So is, Dragnet, both the 1950's series and the later one. But resolution isn't great.

You can also get, Blue Heelers, an Aussie cop show set in a small town in Victoria state. It improved some in the last two or so seasons with a hot female detective. The guns were usually heavy barrel S&W M-10's, with detectives having M-36 snubs.

Oh man! you just let me down - you mean CHiPs wasn't like the real thing?!?!?!?

And I must have been absent from the academy the day they taught us how to throw our PR-24's at the ankles of fleeing suspects to trip them like Shatner did in TJ Hooker.

While Adam-12 might seem a bit tame for modern times, I really admire the morals and sense of duty that was presented. Upon a recent viewing of the entire series, I noticied that many episodes are still relevant today. Some of my favorite examples would be the one where Malloy shows "officer presence" by holding up a group of robbers with an empty K-38 until Reed arrives. Or the one where Malloy is stranded alone in a wrecked cruiser.

Another would be "Elegy for a Pig". I believe Jack Webb made this episode as a tribute to all officers killed in the line of duty, and Martin Milner's voice over work is amazing. With all the anti-police nonsense going on lately, this episode should be aired again on primetime network TV.

I saw the episode with the kid that had his head stuck in a fence and the yellow dump truck episode last night. Th eepisode with the dented fender was funny too.

Adam 12 ran during the time I was a cop and it was as realistic as a cop show could be and still have people watch. My 17 y/o grandson liked the show so much I got him the whole series on DVD. As i moved up the LEO food chain Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue became the new reality, both good shows. I've been retired 20years now so I have lunch each week w/other retirees and we talk about how tough we used to be.

Adam-12 was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid, along with"Emergency". They used to run back to back in the afternoon. Watching Adam-12 is what first made me want to be in law enforcement. A number of guys I know mention Adam-12 when talking about why they went into law enforcement.

The other TV show that really captured the job was "Barney Miller", I still enjoy watching it even though I've seen every episode at least 10 times.

Loved it but Police Story was my favorite. One night they were showing an argument between an Officer and his wife. My wife and I were laughing. We had had the same argument almost word for word on several occasions. We still laugh about it and I've been retired since 1999.

one other thing I would have added to the Malloy speech. Don't smoke in my cruiser. Whenever I had to use a fleet car, I would go by the shop to get fuel, and incidentally pull out the ashtray and toss it on the roof. Must be 20 of them up there.

Police Story comes on every afternoon here on the H&I cable network. It was one of my favorites too.

We were chasing a burglary suspect through an apartment complex one night and one of our guys threw his stick (not the side handle PR-24 junky thing) at him and knocked him down. The cop admitted it was a lucky shot, but he glowed at roll call for a couple of nights.

I shudder to think how many beautiful K-38's bounced off the concrete in trying to reholster the clam shell rig.

AN Officer I knew in LA said the kids would run by an Officer and try to push the button and drop the gun to the ground.

I heard of clam shell holsters. But I never thought any one used them.

William Boyett played Sgt. MacDonald on Adam 12. Before that, he often appeared as a policeman on other shows. In a Highway Patrol episode, there is a scene where he is supposed to holster his revolver after a bad guy is apprehended. He had so much trouble with the clam shell holster he winds up sticking his revolver in his belt! I guess in those days, it was too much trouble to reshoot the scene so that's the way it stayed.

I have the entire series on DVD. Just started over watching them for the 3rd or 4th time. Some scenes are a little corny, but that's the way it was in the 70s. Just started Chips on DVD, the acting is not nearly as good as Adam-12.

Throwing your baton at a "BG" and miss, you have one less impact weapon and now the "BG" has a weapon he can use against you.
