Anybody have experience putting night sights on an X Frame? I've done a bit of reading around and it seems like meprolight sights will work for other frames, but I don't think for the X Frame. The rear blade seems similar, but the front sight is different from my 4" 500.

They have two models for smith revolvers:

Also, the gun shoots 2' low with the stock sights. I have to raise the rear sight very high to get it to shoot accurately. What front and rear sight heights would help to bring things on target better? I believe the stock font is .296" and the rear is .126".

Thanks!

I called Meprolight. The sights that they make will not fit on an xframe.

Doesn't look like anybody makes them!

I had night sights installed in my 460v... I can't quite recall the exact product... Stand by and I'll see if I can dig up the info...

OK I found what I have.. http://www.meprolight.com/default.asp?catid={11F74E4D-232C-4F67-B4AA-8ADEC1853756}&details_type=1&itemid={82F3F9FD-1A25-4204-A62C-A81FEC061C0A}

I notice the link does not take you directly to the product but the home page instead... Click on "civilian market", then Smith and Wesson. Once in there you will see a set for S&W K, L, and N-frame revolvers. The rear sight is the same, but might be a different height. I had to make adjustments with mine. The front ramp insert is the same on the X-frame as the others as well. Not really sure why they don't show that set to include application on the X-frame.

I opted to let my LGS install the sights. He did encounter an issue to do with the installation of the rear aperture, something to do with the rear sight retaining/adjustment screw. The factory orange insert (alone) in the front sight must be removed and the Meprolight insert installed in it's place.

Once it was done I found the sight picture much improved for me with the 3-dot arrangement along with an obvious if not expected improvement in low light conditions.

Interesting from the standpoint of playing around.

Good grief, a heavy load fired at night would trash your night vision for 10-15 min. Better get what you aimed at or it's all over. Don

I didn't get them so much for firing in complete darkness, but found them to be a significant improvement over the stock equipment when hunting from the shadows of the hemlocks and whatnot.

Understand and valid point.

I have tinkered around on some non mainstream topics like making shot shells for the 500. Sort of inconsistent, most of them are pretty potent, around 400gr of shot, a few much less powerful. Don

Yes Sir, my 460 is definitely NOT my stand-by home defense weapon, matter of fact, all of my handguns are locked up. I have only one home defense weapon on the ready, my Rem 870 with 4rds of 00 Buckshot in the tube ready to rack in and go to work. Ridiculous over penetration risk, massive muzzle flash, deafening blast, close neighbors, kids in the next room, most likely would be dark, and I can't see worth a darn without my contacts in... Those reasons validate the scattergun as the best option for me by a wide margin.

I've actually been kicking around the idea of accessorizing my 870 to serve that purpose better as I have not used it for deer hunting in years. Making it illegal to hunt with would be no loss in the field for me, I have three bolt rifles and two lever actions to choose from for that job.

I put the Meprolights on one of my 4" 500s about a decade ago.

As DonD points out, in a nighttime self defense scenario you want to be using ammunition that has flash suppressant added to the powder.

Did they fit easily, or require modification?? I called Meprolight and they said that they will not fit an xframe.

All - I want the night sights for 4am and 10pm walks in the woods, not my nightstand. :)
