Pawn Shop contact sending me pictures of rough exterior S&W revolver. Serial number 39008 No Prefix 38 cal. Love saving older models. If bore and action are ok...should I bother driving 30 minutes to check it out? Thoughts on $250.00 OTD?

Looks like maybe re blued? And pretty rough as you say.

Were it me, I'd not make the drive.
Interesting grips, though.

for $250? i'd probably buy it even if it's rough- In my area I could sell it for $100+ more than that without doing anything but cleaning it.

Also, that SN can't be right or some mods have been made. The extractor rod is post WWII and the gun has a long throw action. My guess is it should have an "S" prefix SN or the barrel and cylinder assembly have been preplaced. I'll bet they gave you the assembly number.

If it was me I'd take two hundred dollar bills, and if after checking it out, I was happy with it, I'd put them down and make my offer.

Now of course I'd have two twenties also available to put down, one at a time, but I think $200 (cash money, that is) just might take it.

Best of luck whatever you decide to do!

Got it! Wouldn't go lower on price. Like a lot of other purchases...Oh Lord! What'd I do? Ok...It is a 5" Barrel 38 cal. SN- S 958354. Bore looks fine and action locks up nice. Bluing is thin and has some light surface rust, mostly on barrel, and doesn't look re-blued. Cylinder has some exterior pitting. All numbers match with exception to grips (LOL). Grips are cool looking but has crack as seen in picture. One thing I haven't mentioned is I've made some pretty good deals with some local pawn shop guys and this particular fella went to a new store recently. This is my first contact with him since he left the other store. Getting heads-up on old Smiths by getting pictures and opportunities before someone else scarfs up the deal is worth forking over $250.00. Anyway...thanks for the feedback.

I like it. Grips may be Catalin. Some old radios are made from that and are worth $ even if they don't work. I see weatherby and Wiregrass
nailed it.
