It is a 6 shot cylinder, but as stated, there are no CTG markings on the barrel. It will hold 38 SPC but I have not measured the chamber.

Is there by any chance a V on the butt to the left of the numbers?

No sir, there are no Other digits on the butt.

Well, then we definitely need pictures, because with .38 Spl. chambering, and six shots, it would have to be an M&P of some sort, with that serial from the mid-1920s, but it has apparently been monkeyed with since there were no 3“ barrels, and a caliber stamping on the barrel was not optional. If it‘s not there at all, the barrel may have been cut from 6“.

Actually, I was correct with my V guesss. It simply has been removed. From the position of the numbers on the butt and the plugged lanyard hole, it has to be a "remodeled" former Victory model, most likely a British service version, from early 1944.

It was re-imported after being surplussed out by the British, had its barrel shortened (thankfully not beyond the lug), and was completely refinished. Since I see no British commercial proofs, the remodel happened here in the US, late 50s/early 60s, and markings including V and remnants of caliber stamping were buffed off. The chambers were reamed to fit .38 Special from the original .38 S&W.

PS: There is a remote possibility someone shortened an original .38 Special US Victory. A good photo down the chamber interiors could confirm or eliminate that possibility.

Yes. Try "open in a new window", it works for me.

Indeed. I have no idea what happened; at the time I posted my original comments on 10/30, they were normally embedded, but now you have to open them manually, and that works even though the PB slide indicates the user needs to update. ????
