New to me 27-2

Received the gun today. It is much better than what is shown in the pictures. I think I can just replace the blade.
Thanks everyone
That's really nice, I especially liked the pictures at the auction site. I paid a bit more for mine 10 days ago, SN N407001. COMES IN WOOD CASE WITH ACCESSORIES. CONDITION: USED VERY LIGHTLY.

Wow! Really nice. Congratulations. I just picked up a really nice 6 inch Colt Trooper Mk III 357 that has quite a bit of finish wear, but no rust. Was thinking of either a hard chrome or Robar NP3 refinish. You've given me some inspiration.

Nice 27 murdock23. You guys showing off your model 27's makes me want to shoot mine...

I like hard chrome I have a H&R 22 revolver in hard chrome from the factory. But I perfer s&w or colt nickel too.

The finish on the guns as shown on GunBroker appears to be an aftermarket nickel and not any kind of hard chrome or automotive chrome. If it were me, the only thing I would do is replace the hammer and trigger with the original CCH versions. You can sell the currently installed parts to defray the cost. If the current finish doesn't work out, hard chrome is always an option down the road.

How can you tell the difference?

I've never seen a hard chrome gun in person, so I have no frame of reference as to how it compares to nickel plating. But the pics in the auction look a heck of a lot like the nickel plating done on my 3 1/2" 27-2, which was an aftermarket nickel job (bought it like that).

Hardchrome was almost universally done in a matte or brushed finish similar to stainless steel. Nickel is highly polished and shiny. There are also slight color differences.

I was going to say it was probably nickel too.

You can't really believe a seller's description, no matter how good of a reputation they have, like Top 100 Seller. Quite of few of these "specializing" online dealers are mainly, if not totally internet based, for a reason. It's easier to act honest and convey empathy when it's all faceless communications & transactions.

In this case, no harm was done, but I've seen way too much scamming going on now that online gun buying has become so popular. They are all aiming for the novice and casual shooter who has no in-depth expertise, which is a great deal of folks.

A gunsmith I trust said it was Nickel. Mystery solved.

In my admittedly biased opinion, being nickel plated is a plus, not a negative. Nickel plating will hold up well over a long period of time with just a little care. Here is a pic of my now 43 year old 5" 27-2, which I bought new in 1974. And it hasn't lead a sheltered life either. I took this pic a few years ago, but it looks much the same nowadays except it wears a set of Cocobolo Culina stocks on it nowadays instead of the football targets in this pic:

Beautiful gun!

I just looked at one locally. Near perfect finish, not a mark anywhere, 8 8 3/4 inch barrel, box and papers for $999. I am broke currently, so i left it.

Also saw a fair condition 4 inch 28-2 for $599. That one I could ALMOST swing, but I was good and passed. I bought three guns last month! Must resist!

Nice score, but to me it looks chrome, nickel has more of a yellowish tint to it, this one does not plus nickel goes on thicker and usually has more of a glossy look.

Nickel usually does have a slight yellow tint to it vs. the straight silver look of chrome. For some reason, Colt nickel is more yellow than S&W, at least to me.

I like it! I keep managing to resist buying a 28 in rough shape and having it NP3'ed, or electroless nickeled. I have a friend with a 5" (looks like it came that way, but I have little knowledge about that) 29 he bought at a pawn shop that was satin finished and he won't sell it to me. I have 3 Tanfoglio CZ clones in satin nickel, and it seems to hold up very well over time. My guns are about 30 years old and had a lot of use before I got them and look great. I did some sanding on the grip panels of one of them, but other than that, they are all in great mechanical and excellent cosmetic condition. The "Mossad" on them always gets people's attention too. The slide/frame fit on this one is amazing, like it's on ball bearings. Shoots great. All I did to it was replace the recoil spring.
