Morning/Afternoon all,

I currently have a Glock 23, .40 cal. Prior to that, I had an M&P Sheild, 9MM, but my hand always seem to hurt with it.

Off to the range later, and was thinking of buying an equivalent of the Glock 23 .40 cal, in a Smith & Wesson M&P.

Best equivalent model to choose?
Also, is there newer M&P due out, like very soon? Curious if I should thus wait, or...

Thanks in advance
Ivan

M&P compact 2.0 in .40 will be the closest. It's also available in the more popular 9mm. It's only been out a short period of time so I don't see it getting replaced any time soon.

I have one in 9mm, and love it. Smith really got it right with the 2.0. The compact 2.0 is exactly the same size as the G23, same capacity, with WAY better ergonomics and a better trigger. FYI, if you get the .40, you can buy a 9mm barrel and shoot both calibers with no alterations.

Now the problem becomes do I swing to the 9MM or stick with the .40 cal.
Range ammo for both seem to be around the same.

iamivanwilliams, I made a very similar decision recently. I have been carrying a Glock 19 for a few years at my PD job and was wanting something else. I went with a full sized M&P 2.0 in 9mm. In your case, if you want something the same size as your G23, and in the same caliber, S&W does make an M&P 2.0 Compact in .40. As was already posted, same overall size, same mag capacity.

Myself, I LOVE my M&P. I have been shooting various Glocks for years and, the first time I took my M&P to the range, I shot better with it than with my G19. To me, it fits my hand better than my G19, the trigger is better than my G19 and it recoils less than my G19, although I don't know how much of that is because the G19 is a compact and my M&P is full sized. Overall, I REALLY like my M&P and, when we go out in the fall to qualify, I will be ditching my G19 and carrying my M&P. It will pair well with my older Shield 9mm that I already carry off duty. Now, I just have to come up with something to replace my Glock 42 for backup and very occasional low profile off duty carry.

Myself, I absolutely despise .40, so the caliber choice would be easy for me to make. However, consider this. With all the advancements in bullet technology over the past 20 or so years, 9mm is a real contender now. Bullet technology has advanced to the point that 9mm is now roughly equal to .40 and .45, AS LONG AS you use GOOD defensive ammo, like Federal HST or Speer Gold Dots. Yes, because I know that the comparison will be made, .40 and .45 advanced, too. However, 9mm seems to have advanced more. .40 and .45 may expand a very small amount larger and there are some arguments that .40 is better through auto body panels and glass, but for typical CCW use, 9mm is a very good choice. You typically get a few more rounds in the mag, 9mm is easier on guns than .40 and 9mm recoils less than .40, which means quicker follow up shots. In the end, only you can decide if you want to change calibers, but just be rest assured that if you do, you really aren't giving up much of anything to go to .40. Good luck with your choice.

I have conversion barrels for my Glock 23, 9mm and .357sig. I pretty much keep the 9mm barrel in it all the time. The .357sig came in handy during the ammo shortage, always had that on the shelf. I think the conversion barrels (Storm Lake) have much better accuracy over the stock barrel. At least for me.

I hear more and more people talking about using 'conversion barrels'...

Right people, I am off to GA Firing Line to trade my Glock 23, for an M&P 2.0 - more than likely a 9MM.

Then to start the task AGAIN, of finding a decent IWB :(

For IWB, I like and have had really good luck with the hybrid designs. I have a CrossBreed SuperTuck for my G19 and an Alien Gear for my Shield. I can't remember which Alien Gear model number I have, it is the one with the leather backer pad, not neoprene or anything like that. For me, they are VERY comfortable and conceal very well because the large backer pad and two belt clips help pull the gun into your side. I like them well enough that when I get some extra cash, I plan on buying a CrossBreed for my M&P 2.0. I understand that holsters are very subjective, however, and that hybrids don't work well for everyone, just throwing it out there for your consideration.

I have a Storm Lake threaded barrel for my 9c and while I am satisfied with it I don't find I shoot it quite as well or at least not better than the stock barrel. YMMV of course. My next after market barrel will be the Apex as soon as they make a threaded barrel for my 2.0 compact. They have made impressive changes in the dwell time and I want to give that a go.

M&P Shield 2.0 purchased and I even did my Evolution of Accuracy class with it.

No comment or feedback on my target?

Well, I am a little proud of it. After going through the "Evolution of Accuracy" class, when my shots go adrift, I now actually know why [emoji851]

You're off to a good start when you call a bad shot and know why. If you shot that target at 25 yards I'd have to say "good for you!" What was the distance? ;) :D

Not so fast 🤣[emoji23]

That was at 15 yards. I did a few good shots at 25 yards, but it was a lot harder.
Albeit, as my shots left, I often knew the bad shots before they even landed. I certainly learned a lot!?!

In a .40, I would take an M&P over a Glock any day, especially if I were considering a WML. I am not directly conversant with the variants, but the version with the 4.25" (I think) barrel would likely be the one. In the 9mm, I think it is a toss-up, although talking to the cadets in our current reserve academy, the M&P was the general preference. The only woman in the class, who is both small and inexperienced with firearms, has an M&P and likes it. (We have one with a Gen 5 G17 who is also doing very well.)

What is WML? Thanks
