Lucky came home the same day he was fixed. I dropped him off at 8:00 am, and think he was picked up around 2:00 or 3:00. Here he was, a little woozy still, when I fit him home. He is on the bed, you can see part of the carrier just behind him.

I think that I picked Bella up the same day also, but not sure. Boys are easier than girls, though, less intrusive surgery.

Some places have mobile veterinarians who come in a fully equipped van and are able to do the neutering inside the van, at your home, wake them up and observe them for a short while and then give you instructions how to do any aftercare and what to look out for. Maybe your vet in town knows of this kind of availability close to you. Some vets who take care of farm animals out in the country do "house calls" and might consider coming if you have a number of cats to neuter. Also there is an organization called Alley Cat Allies that believe in trap-neuter-return and take donations all over the country. They come where a feral colony is, trap the kitties humanely ( yours wouldn't need to be trapped) bring them to a participating vet for neutering that the organization subsidizes and then they return them to where they were which is your house. They do this for free in a feral cat colony that doesn't belong to anyone. Maybe in your case since the cats were feral and you have a hardship in traveling to a vet, they would consider helping you out. It's worth a call.. They can say no but maybe they can recommend a solution for you. I'm just not sure what's wrong with drifter and that's what worries me... Try to keep her inside till you make contact with a vet in case the hot weather is dehydrating her or something worse. If you think she's overheated, try to cool her body by applying cool cloths and changing them often to draw heat out of her body. Try to encourage her to drink. Offer diluted milk if she won't drink water, but don't let it stand around and get spoiled. Ask the forum here if anyone else can pin down what's wrong... With the fishmox, have you ever given it to her before? I'm not a vet, but if you can tell me the generic name and the strength on the box, maybe I can figure out about how much to give her. I can't say if it would be the right antibiotic because I'm not sure if she even needs one... It could be a parasitic infection but that would be a different treatment.... Does she have a normal stool and urine so far as you know? Does she have any visible bite wounds from an animal outside?... I'll let you know if I can think of anything else that might be helpful... In the meantime, I'm praying for her to get well... I'm thinking about her and you..I know how much you love her...

she had one last year. worse than this. she had brown discharge from her eyes, some panting n raspy breathing.
now theres panting, but mostly wanting to stay inside n get loved.

when she is unwell, she wants cuddling.
these pills are 500mg.
i gave her 1/5 of a cap this morn.
she may not need that much.

How much do you think she weighs?... She probably should get about 60 mg twice a day for 10 days. Don't just give it to her once or it will make the germs stronger. You've got to give it at least a week to 10 days and give the dose twice a day about 12 hours apart. If you gave it this morning, then give a dose tonight and continue morning and evening at least a week. If she gets worse by morning then get a call in to the vet. Good luck. I'm bringing my other dog Jackson to the vet in the morning... He may have a urinary infection.

Use this as a guide. Fish Mox is amoxicillin... I'd give her a dose on the high side and do it every 12 hours. So if she's big (10lbs) you can go with the 1/5 of the 500 mg like you gave her every 12 hours for 10 days. Amoxicillin isn't usually very dangerous so you can't do much harm by trying it. Note that it warns you to stop if you get serious diarrhea or bloody stool. If it's respiratory and this doesn't work, then it may be viral instead of bacterial and viral diseases don't usually respond to amoxicillin.

this is because all of a sudden she won't eat it in starkist tuna, my standby for kitty meds.
but i just found out she will take it dissolved in milk, so we'll be on a twice/day schedule tomorrow.
i negotiated with the vet. looks like i can bring 2 cat in at 8am n take them at 10am.
this is doable if i combine it with my own doc visit n shopping.
i'm usually in town 90 minutes once/month, so i can wait a half hour for my drifter.

what in the world will i do with my 5 cans of tuna? not fit for me to eat....

Do the kits eat it? Drifter may come back to eating it.. It stays good a long time. Let vet give them rabies and distemper shots as they get neutered. My dogs get an annual distemper and a rabies every 3 years. Cats are usually the same schedule. These shots are very necessary. I'm glad you were able to make arrangements with your vet... Have vet check drifter's lungs and let him know she had been sick and tell him what medicine worked for her. Good work... You're very resourceful.. How many miles away from town are you? I'm glad you will be able to fit in a MD appointment for yourself. You've been taking care of everyone else and "Mama" has to be healthy to take care of your little four footed family [emoji307][emoji307]
PS do not keep the cats in car without you after you pick them up after neutering. Especially in your climate, the car can get to 120° in a few minutes even with the windows partially opened. They will die very quickly. If you have no choice, bring them to your MD appt in carriers so they will be safe and cool. Or get MD appt done and shopping while they're having surgery. Plan to keep them inside for a period of days after surgery till they heal. Everything will go fine [emoji4]

She'll sedate her real quick. For drifter, It would be worth the extra cost if she wants to run a quick blood test, if they do that with cats before anesthetizing. My Logan would have died if Andrea hadn't had that information before anesthesia. His blood work was not good and she was able to get his neuter done with sedation rather than general. He would have bled out if she took him under and took as long as usual... She had to do it in half the time (with local and sedation) to get him awake in time to treat him quickly for the blood work problem. It seems like everything happens to Logan. But this time, luckily it didn't happen. I have a very special veterinarian and she's amazing. See if drifter and your kit can get the 3 year version of the rabies shot. Most big pet stores give shots now. If that's closer to you, when the time comes for boosters, they can have shots there (usually without waiting if you have appt) next year on one shopping trip to town. If drifters bloodwork is good, chances are the kits will be ok too. What Logan had was a hereditary condition... Maybe it's only a dog thing... I don't remember pre-op bloodwork for my kitties, but they were all neutered 18 years ago or more. Maybe they didn't do that then. Everything will be fine. I just worry to much... Sorry!![emoji16]

if i could knock him out, i'd do it myself. i've done it to baby bulls.
i asked for an exam. i'm spending a fortune as it is.
it occurs to me drifter may not be sick, she may just be preg.
when she's sick or preg, it's the same.
she decides she needs me.
we are bonded.

I know... She loves you.... You gave her babies a home as well... She'll do fine and you won't have to worry about her having more kits going forward. Veterinary care is expensive.

Hi Susie -

I haven't been here for a while so I am late to the conversation. When mother cats want to ween their young, they ignore them or even chase them away so it sounds to me like this is what she is doing especially if she is pregnant again. I think she probably is since she doesn't have other symptoms except panting. Also, JenX is right about the kittens not being fixed will affect how Drifter interacts with them as well. Once they are all fixed and Drifter is not pregnant anymore, I am sure they will get along again.

With the ferals, I release the males the next day (unless it's raining) and the females about 3-4 days later. It depends on how well they do in the recovery cages too; if they are eating and having normal body functions. Somebody dumped some new cats in one of our colonies (or they are relocating due to construction in what was once open space) so I'm going to have to start trapping again to prevent kittens. Cats can have 4 litters a year so it gets out of control very quickly!

I am glad you are getting them fixed and vaccines. It is best for their health and for them getting along and saves you from worry. I wish them the best with the surgery and recovery and hope your appt goes well too.

grip, you must get a great price on vet care.
2 cats will cost me almost $300.
i never thot i'd spend that much on cats.
at least i'll now have a lifetime supply of cats.
if neutering was free, i'd get another kit or 2 fixed.
i guess drifter is preg.
she still spends most of her time indoors n is very loving, for drifter.
mind you, when drifter is twice as loving, she is 10% as loving as the kits.
my problem with kits is that i can't keep them out of the house.
they were born here n think this is their home.
they are very fast.
if i crack the door open they are in before i can blink.
at least, after they have a good meal n a nap, i can catch them n toss them out.
i tried using the front door n feeding them outside but they still want in.
i don't actually need any cat besides drifter, but i'm used to them.
i kinda like the bear clan. they are loving n gentle.
the natayos are more aggressive, even when being loving.
in a perfect world, i'd keep the bears but it's too expensive.

Tain't nuthin' to neuterin a tom cat. Stick him head first in a cowboy boot and do what you got to do. Best stick the boot outside the door when you dump him out though.

I never did it, and I ain't sure that anyone that tried to put a tomcat in a boot lived to tell about it.

now it sounds like a 2 perso job.
i'd have done it if you had first hand knowledge,
i feel kinda bad. i just trapped kits n loaded them into carriers.
they were crying pitiously.
but, they are gone.
i'm not concerned with their well being. this guy always has a couple little spaniels with him in the truck.
he takes good care of his critters.
feel kinda sad, but happy i don't have to shoot them.
having litters in the house is a bad idea.

I would guess a 3 man job.. One to hold the boot, one to hold the cat in the boot and one to take care of business.. Lots of heavy leather gloves seem to be in order.
