Coffee getting old

My super duper fresh ground coffee beans have sort of lost their "Zing",
so I tried to pick it up a notch with a little added flavor.

Tossed in five whole Clove pods in the blender and let her rip.

Lets just say they do better in a HAM !!

Just have to take my Java regular or with a touch of Cinnimon.
Just a heads up for you coffee lovers........
and no, I could not finish off my mug full of this test run. :eek:

Ozark Marine. There was a time when my NCOIC walked into the trailer I was living in between MCAS Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune doing much the same thing. The difference is I drank Budweiser. He just kind of shook his head.
 
Cafe' Bustello-3 heaping scoops to a 12 cup Mr. C if you are a Gringo. Drinking it for close to 40 years.

My brother ran CFR 91 and 121 operations out of Miami's corrosion corner for many years. IIRC his secretary's coffee was equal parts Bustello, cane sugar, condensed milk and superheated water. You knew it was right when the spoon would stand upright on its own.
 
When I could still drink coffee I only used a Pyrex glass coffee percolator. Tried a lot of other stuff but none could compare I take it Elk and Deer hunting for the other guys and They all agree it's the best. Coffee caffeine makes My heart skip beats so I am stuck with tea. Different caffeine. BTW I have an old friend who puts a little Dr Jim in His morning coffee.

It's coffee, not the treasure of the Lost Dutchman Mine.

Throw it out and buy some fresh stuff.

How old is it?
Coffee starts aging out as soon as it's roasted.
Aging speeds up when it's ground.
That's why it's best to buy local from a roaster.
I buy from Norm.
Often I walk into his roasting room, to harass him as he watches the roaster.
He don't roast lighter than a Full City.
When he's doing a really dark roast, he watches the temp very close and drops a few beans to examine.
A really dark roast is very close to charcoal!

Best to buy it whole bean in quantities that you'll consume within 10 to 14 days, and only grind as you use it. Store in an air tight canister on the counter, not the freezer. Trader Joe's has some pretty decent coffee for the money.

The only added flavor that I ever use, is occasionally some Bailey's in the evening.

I'll remember, NO cloves.

You might consider Swedish egg coffee the next time you feel the need to enhance your cup of java. This is sometimes referred to as campers coffee.

Swedish egg coffee is made by mixing coffee grounds with a raw egg that is then added to boiling water and then strained. Some folks even add the shell to the grounds.

The egg shells are alkaline, while coffee is acidic. When added to coffee, the eggshells remove much of the bitterness and mellow out the flavor. The result is a rich, drinkable coffee that has little to no bitterness or acidity.

Vacuum-sealed containers, such as a Planetary Design Airscape. are arguably one of the best ways to store beans, but they don't come cheap. These containers typically come with a one-way valve to allow carbon dioxide to escape but to keep oxygen out.

Store coffee in opaque containers away from moisture and light.

Most grocery store coffee is already old before you put it in your grocery cart. Today, I bought a 3#bag - well, what use to be a 3# bag, with an expiration date of 08 MAY 2019. This bag lasts no more than a week in my house. I suspect it was roasted on 08 May 2018, which means the coffee was already 50 days out of the roaster before I bought it.

I always burp the air out of the bag through the one way valve after pouring out enough beans to grind and resealing the bag.

Once the coffee is brewed, I pour the fresh brewed coffee into carafes so it won't steep in the pot and acquire an unpleasant taste.

I lived in Costa Rica for ten years after retiring from the PD and was a part owner of an organic coffee plantation. The coffee doesn't get much better than fresh roasted and ground brewed in fresh water.

The water is important! It cannot be that toxic waste from the chemically charged city water supply we get from our taps. Buy bottled water for best results.
 
Lately I have been drinking Seattle's Best Portside Blend. It is stout but not too acidic. I have a cousin that drinks it very strong and adds one spoon full of instant coffee and egg shells to it. Seemed like a lot of work to me. Best coffee I ever had was made with river water in dads old black metal coffee pot over a camp fire at sun rise.

That sounds like an Arbuckle recipe!

Recipe for COWBOY COFFEE
4 qt. water
1 1/2 cups freshly ground coffee (coarse grind – same as French Press)
1 eggshell
1/2 cup cold water
Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan or coffee pot. Add coffee grounds and eggshell to boiling water. Return to a boil, remove from heat and let stand for 2 minutes. Slowly add cold water to settle grounds to the bottom. Let stand for 1 minute to allow grounds to settle. Use any remaining coffee to extinguish the campfire.
