So I asked about your favorite road trip gun last month. I had a road trip coming-up & was trying to decide what to take.
I just got back from my trip. This took me through CA, AZ, NM, CO, WY, UT, ID, & NV.
I took and carried my Glock 27 (.40 S&W) everyday, but I also brought something smaller. My Ruger LCP. I OWB carried in a Fobus with a large overshirt everyday (even while driving 5 1/2 to 8 1/2 hrs.).
I was glad to always have the gun on. This included several stops for gas and rest area bathroom breaks.
I stayed in Hotels. Some didn't offer a safe. This left the little LCP hidden in the suitcase. I really didn't need the LCP at all, and could have left it at home.
There was only one time I felt I had too much gun. That was during an Independence Day parade. I was sitting on the curb and felt I was probably printing. I guess the LCP would have worked than, but I had a mile walk back through the city to my room. I wasn't sure what to expect.
There also wasn't a time I felt I didn't have enough gun. I had 11 rounds of .40, backed-up my a 15 round mag.
At night I swapped the 10 round mag for a 13 rounder with grip adapter (Similar to a Glock 19/23 feel) and had my Surefire flashlight on the night stand next to the gun.
Due to the heat and all the walking around, A light weight J frame or Glock 43 would have been more comfortable. Nothing against the LCP, it's just a too small for my hands and has very small sights.
I only ran into one location that had a no guns sign posted. An Indian Casino in AZ (I was staying in the Hotel part, but had to go through the Casino to get to the food court).
I didn't bring more than 15 round mags into CO. And had to cancel my hotel in Aurora, CO due to the Hotel's no firearms policy (and City enforced). I changed hotels before my trip. It's good to research your area before you go.
The most aggressive drivers were on the 15 fwy between Las Vegas and LA. Everyone else was pretty mellow and actually drove the speed limit (didn't see one cop as I passed through WY). I saw a lot of great country & people.
Not sure I would carry anything different? Maybe my Glock 43 with a +2 mag options.
