Las Cruces is touting a " successful" gun buyback promoted by the Police Dept and the New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence.
Citizens were offered gift cards in return for firearms. Gift cards valued at $250 for any semi-auto rifle, $200 for semi-auto pistols and $100 for any others.
The guns will be disassembled and made into lawn art, garden tools and other useful items which will be sold and money used to support future buybacks.
160 guns were bought-back from a population of 101,759 citizens whose largest age group is between 25 and 44. 56.8 % Hispanic, 34.3 % white with 23.3 % of total, living below the poverty level.
The Police Chief stated that the buyback was not an anti 2nd amendment statement but to make the citizens safer. Help to keep unwanted firearms from possibly being stolen and out of the hands of criminals.
Another very successful gun buyback. I'm sure the residents feel safer already.
UPDATE: Buyback must not have been wildly successful, two men shot at 3:00 AM Sunday. One 16 and one 20. No further news from LCPD.
