On a side note US Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina announced

we had SIXTY-SIX TONS of weapons grade Plutonium stored @ the

Savannah River Site... About forty miles from ME..:-(

I visited the Hiroshima Peace Park Museum when I was 17 years old. As a member of the Greater Boston Youth Symphnoy Orchestra. I was a solid all-state cellist. The orchestra was made up of far more talented kids than myself. I met a Zero pilot ace in the peripheral “smoking rooms” on the outside of the horseshoe of the museum. He was probably in his late seventies. We had to communicate via a translation book, but it worked and we did. I had absolutely no understanding at the time that I was basically speaking to a samurai. Or a dinosaur. Or a person who shouldn’t exist. I have to believe him. He had been shot down, taken captive at sea, and eventually freed. He said he was treated fairly in captivity and held no resentment. But that his entire family was lost in Hiroshima.

No, it would have been in theater and ready to use by Aug 19. And I cannot remember where I read it, but I remember reading where they would have been able to have another bomb ready to use every couple of weeks for some time after that time frame. Now, Hanford did run into a problem in 1946 and had a constrained supply of Plutonium being produced but they worked around that problem in a year or so I believe. Able and Baker shots at Bikini Island were from Pu produced in 1945 for dropping on Japan.

He knew first hand what war was like... l worked at Anneston Army Depot awhile back..

We built an incinerator there to burn the Chemical Weapons made there.

Chemical weapons/gas made during WWII for killing Japanese people on

the Home lslands BEFORE an American lnvasion... Ole Harry said he would

kill them ALL. They would CEASE to be a culture. He was prepared to

gas EACH island... Gassing was to be done BEFORE the first Marine ever

set foot on a Home lsland.

The Emperor should have HUNG just like 0le Tojo.

It was much better for the peace that he not be hung. If everybody just did what they wanted he probably would have been hung and the entire country would have commit suicide.

This right here!!!!!! If you don't believe that, just look at the statistics on invading Okinawa. Okinawa was a prefecture of Japan and when we invaded it, we lost 12,520 KIA and up to 55,000 wounded. The Japanese lost between 77,000-110,000 KIA military and up to 150,000 civilians. And from what I gather, Okinawa wasn't one of the more favored prefectures of Japan. So it is safe to say that the losses by the 2 atom bombs were much less than what would have happened with an invasion of the main islands.

I believe the 3rd core is the one referred to as the "Demon Core". Since its deployment wasn't needed, it was used for criticality tests...and racked up some domestic casualties as the Los Alamos lab learned safety protocol the hard way.

On a side note, Eric Schlosser's book Command and Control is very interesting read on the safety issues of maintaining a nuclear arsenal. It recounts weapons research and operational accidents from Trinity through the late 1990's. Very interesting read, especially when you consider the US had/has infinite funds to maintain such an arsenal. Makes one wonder what kind of accidents the Soviets had, and what N. Korea's nuclear future will be.

Same here, pop was in ETO, but headed to PTO with training along the way. Uncle J. R. was already in theatre, most likely, neither would have made it home, luck only goes so far... I would not be sitting here typing this. Would you be here not reading my not posted post? How would our world have changed?
It is not very likely that you will ever see me apologize for our use of these weapons.

There is a very good chance that if I was here, I would have a different father.

How about a "heart attack" some time in 1946. I'm sure Wild Bill Donovan could have arranged something. Then followed by a State funeral. Truman sending his condolences. MacArthur being a pallbearer. End the line of emperors.
