Lackland Basic training, 30 duty days long, Monday through Friday, not counting holidays, Saturday, or Sunday. I arrived on Thursday night, Memorial Day was Monday, May 31. July 4 was also a week day. Day 5 at Lackland was Tuesday June 1, the start of training day #2.
The DI's were from the south. Two platoons started the same day. My platoon was from the North because we arrived after dark. The other platoon was from the South and had arrived in mid-afternoon. Academically we were better, physically the South had us beat hands down. The guys from New York, New Jersey couldn't run 100 yards or walk 2 blocks without exhaustion.
Don't remember much else from 5-27-70 to 7-12-70. Oldest guy was 26, Master's degree in Education. I was the third oldest guy at 22.
EDIT: Basic training was 30 days long. "Training days" were counted as Monday through Friday, not including holidays. Holidays, Saturdays, and Sundays were still training days for the recruits but not counted . We had physical training, close order drill, marched to and from the chow hall, barracks cleaning, and marches just for conditioning on the weekends. I still hate waxed tile floors. There was no such thing as "weekends off", there was training activity, it just didn't count as a "training day".
