While browsing at my local gun store, I noticed a S&W revolver with a 3-inch barrel. Upon examining it I noticed it is a Model 66-5. I asked if they have the box for it and found out they do not. We negotiated a price that everyone was happy with of $650. It is now doing duty beside my bed and will be joining my Model 15 at the range this week.

I'll give you $700 and pay for shipping to my FFL? If it's in great shape then you definitely got a real good deal!

Since I cannot upload photos directly from my desktop to this forum, I will not be able to provide any photos. Should this site's admin decide to fix that problem, I'll be happy to provide some eye candy!! I will not upload any of my photos to some web based photo $$ bucket!

Under reply go to advanced, then to manage attachments, then select the file from the location on your computer, upload and submit the reply. Easy.

Nice find! I am getting a 3" M66-3 delivered early next week that I found on GB, the 3" K Frames are awesome!

Is that a "stocking dealers special" with the 3.125 inch barrel?

Somethings odd, my -2 sure looks different.

No-lock, should be a round butt under those grips.......... the barrel looks to be a newer style than found on my 3" 66 -3s and -4.

Edited to add: Per the SCS&W 4th ed.; -5 66s, post 1998( to 2002) had a lot new features......including frame design, MIM hammer and floating firing pin....-6s added the lock.

Your gun looks to be a transition or stocking Dealer gun made up on a pre -5 frame.

No that is definitely the bigger K frame and the MIM parts just like a 66-5 should have. Follow the recoil shield straight down on the left side, see there is no pressed in cylinder stop stud. The piece that stops the cylinder from falling out when open is now cast into the frame.

Must be the angle ....... the curve on frame at/below the hammer looks like the old frame style not the newer -5 and beyond.

The -5 had the same profile frame as earlier models, the change from the graceful good looking profile to the later more "flat" profile took place when they added the integral lock with the -6.

The OP's gun clearly has replaced front and back sights, but the frame, barrel and pinned in front sight are proper.

Here's mine, all original except for the Patridge and Spegels.

Love the Patridge front sight.

My 66-5 has the round butt, I have a set of conversion grips presently mounted on the gun because I prefer the more square but feel in my hands.

The rear sight on my 66-5 are night sights and the front sight is a red fiber sight that does not use the "normal" HiViz style tubes. I don't know if this further muddies the water or not.
