I have a Florida Highway Patrol 27-2 in nickel, a nickel 2.5" M19-3 that was used by Customs & Immigration, and a shiny 15-3 that was sent to the Campus PD of a Louisiana university. I have seen the nickel Detroit Model 10s and Austin PD nickel HDs and Model 27s. Any other departments or agencies known for carrying nickel plated revolvers back in the day? Seems they were fairly uncommon. Feel free to share any examples you have.

Mid 1960's I remember some members of the Washington D.C. Police Department carrying Nickel plated Model 10's. Kyle

My department didn't issue side arms for most of the time I worked there (23 plus years). I would say that at least a third of our officers carried nickel handguns, a third stainless and the other third blue. Law enforcement officers are out in all types of weather and nickel was one of the earliest finishes that resisted corrosion. Plus, a number of LEOs wanted the bad guys to SEE their side arms if they were drawn.

My Department started issuing revolvers in the early 1950's. The revolver of choice was the Model 15. Officers were still allowed to carry their own revolvers but they had to be blued with a four inch barrel and wood stocks - though some veteran Officers maintained stag handles. Nickel plate was not allowed. When we began to issue the Model 66 in the late 70's the "silver magnums" were favored by some because the bright finish was thought to be more intimidating.

I saw Dallas officers with nickel ones in my teens, but they were private purchases. I think the issued guns were blue, until Model 64 was adopted. A detective who investigated a burglary of my mother's home carried a Model 15 in nickel with stag grips.

One gun carried by a guy working downtown was a Renaissance grade Browning Hi-Power, and I saw one Webley MK VI that was nickle, with white plastic grips featuring an inlaid rose in color.

Were those fancy Brownings chromed or soft finished nickle? They were engraved, of course.

Quite a few officers had .357 and .45 Colt guns with six-inch barrels. And I'm sure there were .41 and .44 Magnums, too. Some may have been nickle.

One officer told me that he shot a felon four times with a Model 29 with full .44 Magnum loads, and the man ran for well over a block before dropping. The cop then switched to carrying a Model 19 .357. Figured it was as deadly and wouldn't waste a lot of energy that wasn't retained in a suspect. Overpenetration is bad on men, not an issue on bears! :D

Not a great photo but the 15-3 with polished stags I fitted for it...

The Customs & Immigration 19-3. I bought this from the retired officer who said he carried it for 19 years and shot qualification with 357 ammo every month.
