New un fired model 29-2 look at it or shoot it?

My vote is keep it unfired and buy another shooter . That is the best advice I have been given by a true collector that has "collector" guns and shooters just alike . By the way this guys shooters are pretty dang nice also.

Forst of all, it's yours to do with what you like.

Will it bring more pleasure sitting in a box and looking at it, or, will you get more pleasure from shooting it?

If it were mine, I'd shoot it, a lot. Will it lose some value after being shot? Maybe, I don't know. I can tell you I would never pay a premium for an unfired gun or a box; means nothing to me. Will someone else? Who knows.

Congrats on getting it; use it in the way that brings you the most enjoyment.

I bought a Model 66 no dash 2.5" nib last weekend. I bring it home on Tuesday (CA BS). I only have 1 gun in my safe so far that is unfired, new in box - A 2nd Gen SAA w Stagecoach box... Never fired, never turned. This 66 will live right next to the Colt.

No, I wouldn't fire that beautiful piece of artwork/investment gun.

I understand you have others to shoot full-power ammo through, but these were made to be fired with factory .44 Magnum ammo.

People tend to treat them like they're a Model 19. I don't get it.

If you fired nothing but full-power ammo through it, I have a feeling you'd give out before the gun.

Shoot it, clean it, put it away. Repeat as necessary. They're not delicate, and they were meant to be fired.

Thanks for the replies so far I appreciate it. This is what's floating around in th back of my head. I read these don't have the endurance package etc. it seems like the web is split with people saying they will shoot loose in 1000 rounds and others saying they have had one for 40 years and shoot it every week with no problems.

I didn't buy this for an investment and have no intention of selling it ever. If I don't shoot it though, I bet one of my two boys would someday when I'm gone. I think they would get more pleasure from that if they had memories of going to the range with dad and shooting it.

I'm just kind of surprised at myself with this. I've always been one of the "shoot it that's what it was made for" guys

I have a 29-2, factory nickled finish, 44mag with S&W presentation box with tools. It is like new, having had only 44 special rounds thru it which left a carbon ring in each chamber which I'm having trouble removing. Mine has grips like yours, made by Altamont for early S&W (?). I will not be shooting mine, period!

If you're asking me what I would do....I would Choot It !

Shooting a gun , like driving a classic muscle car, is so much more enjoyable than just standing there and looking at it .
Life's short....suck all the enjoyment out of life while you still can.
All too soon you get old and can't do the fun stuff any longer... It's nice to have the memories of shooting guns and driving cars .
Let the stupid heirs cry over the devaluation of the gun because you wanted to have fun and make memories.
I shoot the heck out of all my guns and just spent $800.00 on speed modifications to the 1968 Chevelle I drive every day.
Shooting those guns and smoking unsuspecting young "hot rodder's" with their new imports who mistakenly think that old guy driving that old car must be slow...Is A Freaking Blast !
My Motto : Shooting is fun...looking isn't so much fun !

Your dilemma shows exactly why I almost NEVER buy a new gun. One more vote for the "it will only be new once" side. Like others, I would encourage you to buy a shooter-grade one as well.

Good luck with your decision!

I keep high condition guns as safe queens bc I like having perfect examples of what the factory used to produce years back. I user lesser condition guns as shooters. I have more than enough shooters to keep I unfired / excellent guns the way they are. That's just me, however.

Well, I have an unfired 629,15-3X2", 19-4 3T and a 15-2X4" that are unfired and I plan to keep them that way. I have others of the same models that I can shoot. I also have a M29 Classic DX 5" with 12 rounds through it( rare animal). So these will stay as is. My favorite guns to shoot are M15's and M28's, and I have several, so they get the use.

I still believe in pride of ownership.

Your gun do as you wish.
I have owned several Smiths that had not been fired outside the factory. I never shot any of them.
In reality there are comparatively few pristine guns of any model available. Some are worth a lot more than others, but all have their fans.
The main reasons I never shot them was because I appreciated the condition they were in and more importantly, there are plenty of folks who want a Smith in that condition. When I am done enjoying them, someone else can still enjoy it.
There are plenty of very clean examples of any model that have been shot.
At this time I only have one unfired gun. It will stay that way for the next person who wants an unfired example.

Did You buy it for Yourself or to just store for someone else. The last owner just stored it for you.

I thought that there were museums dedicated to having a pristine model to just look at.

I guess you can figure out what I would do.

It's your firearm, you may do with it as you wish. There was a time when NIB 29-2's were plentiful, that time has long since passed. If it were mine, I'd look upon it as an investment.

I would not shoot it. These guns were made to be shot when the factory was producing them every day. Well times have changed, first they changed the way they were made and eventually they stopped making them altogether. Now you have something in pristine condition that is out of production. All that will be made are already made.

You could shoot any model 29 you please, I would be more inclined to find one that has already been shot.

I have been looking for a like new pre lock model 29 blued with a 6.5 barrel for a long time.

I have been looking for this with full intentions of shooting it and enjoying it.

You had a long search to own and SHOOT one... I think you answered your own question... your intent was to shoot it... if it is just an investment, flip it and get a shooter... and buy ammo with the extra cash in your pocket.
