I picked up a 586 no dash at the gun show yesterday out of pure pity. The poor thing looks like it was rode hard and should have been put down instead of away. It's only saving grace is that the bore is good and the mechanics and timing are perfect. I paid a whole $160 for it so I have some room for refinishing should I decide too. What can I do for this girl so that they don't turn the music off when I take her to the dance? Or should I just turn the lights out, close the blinds and pretend she's Pamela Anderson?

Normally I would apologize for the lousy pics, but not this time. You can't unsee these so why show all the gory details?

She certainly has a lot of character. Maybe spent her life in a salt marsh.

How's it shoot? I'd probably either leave it as is or dunk it in cold blue.

The pitting is probably too deep to smooth out with a full blue refinish. Maybe a sandblasting then brushed chrome finish would look ok.

If it's mechanically sound, I'd clean up the exterior as best I could and continue shooting it. That and keep it oiled up so it doesn't get worse.

Ohhhhhh that is so sad! Great price though, I wouldn't be able to stop myself either.

Kroil soak for a week?
Fine bronze wool every day with light pressure and back to the Kroil bath. See how much you can clean 'er up....then decide. It's going to be pitted, but you may be able to bring it from really ugly to just plain rough.

I would either clean it up well and use it, but a factory refinish would be nice too. Since it is a modern gun the factory will put it back to appearing new for about $300 with shipping. Good luck in your decision.

Factory finish all the way. You would have some great before and after pictures. I just have a feeling that old gal will clean up real nice.
Be sure to let us know what you decide.

I'd go to the loading bench and start cranking out some rounds to feed it. I might change the grips, but that would be the only thing.

ENTER IT IN AN ABUSED GUN CONTEST.

Post more pics when you work up the courage to remove the goodyears. :D Look at all the $ you saved for ammo. A real conversation starter at the gun club, be prepared for some ribbing.

So I pulled the grips off and it looks exactly the same as the rest of the "junkyard art" on the outside. I still can't believe the mechanics are all good. In fact, the trigger pull is outstanding! I'll take it to the range this week and see how it shoots.
