It's a modern 6-shot cylinder. I don't see anything unusual. Trick question? :D

no, not intended to be a trick question. I just don't know the names of the various elements to ask a specific question. all the 17's i've looked at did not the recessed holes.

how modern is this? it is a 17-8

I am looking for a target revolver.

Looks like a new "Classic" to me. I'd opt for a vintage specimen.......just sayin!

That sure looks like one of the new classic models with the round butt service stocks, pencil barrel, and big tall Patridge front sight.

Your observations sums it up.

My thought is that they changed the features that made the 17 a classic.

It was a special model intended more for collecting than target shooting, IMO, though I'm sure there are those who will disagree with that premise. If you want a Model 17 for target shooting, any of the older versions up through the 17-5 should suit you, and if you are fond of the Python-type barrel, you can look around or a 17-6 or 17-7, but these models can be pricey. The 17-5s have a slightly heavier barrel than the earlier models, if that is of any interest to you.

thank you for this information. I like the look of the full lug, although it seems more suited for a larger caliber.

The 17-8 was first introduced with a full lug 6" barrel and a 10 shot aluminum alloy cylinder in 1996 . The standard catalog states the frame design may have changed in 1998 . In 2001 the Performance Center made the Heritage series on the 17-8 in the new frame style and the frames were blued and another run was color case hardened . Locks started with the -9's. I would still think it would make a fine target revolver .
