My Knife Addiction

That pretty much confirms what I've been hearing about the Chinese "Schrade" products. I got spoiled by the real ones made in this country, which I've used--the Old Timer carbon steel line--for many years.

I'll hang on to my eighteen bucks.

Actually, after working the primary blade 150 times or so it opens and closes acceptably, not good. The tools have not been worked as much and their opening and closing is not acceptable. I bought it to see what China made Schrades were like and to have a backup beer bottle opener and can opener. American Outdoor Brands is the parent company of Schrade and and is the parent company of Smith & Wesson. I'll get my $18 out of it, but would not give one as a gift, or recommend one to someone looking for a first or only knife.

How about some toothpaste or Simichrome polish in the joint, to speed up the smoothing action.

A mild abrasive is a good idea. I doubt my Colgate Total will do anything but be messy, I have no Simichrome and will not spend more money on the knife. Do you think Soft Scrub cleaner might help? Maybe a solution of Bon Ami and water? Of course it might irritate my hands faster too.

My Browning knife I bought 30+ years ago. I think it cost me about $20.00.

Whatever you have. What could it hurt? When you are done, flush with soap and water, chased with WD40.

I decided added abrasives would irritate my baby soft hands and pulled out my work gloves. Back and forth, back and forth again and again. Blasted the pivots with WD-40 and washed with hot water. The thing is supposed to be 17% chrome stainless and has plastic covers, it should not be harmed. I ended today's work with a light application of Tuf-Glide.

I mated the knife up with a little key-chain multi-tool, found that the beer bottle opener is also a suitable beer can opening assist device. It is now an acceptable utility tool.

I punched up a reverse inflation calculation. What cost me $18 today would have been about $2.75 back in 1970. My guess is the original USA version of that knife would have run $15 to $20 in 1970. Of course in 1970 I would not have had to spend several hours of time making the knife work at an acceptable level.
