totin a Browning Hi Power - gettin hooted at! ***UPDATE***

The BHP was fairly popular within my old department (Big City).
with uniformed and PC coppers.
First one I shot was an old head's piece in patrol.
He kept the HP in an old cigar box on the front seat.

I soon found out why....
2-3 days later I am driving and we jump a "rollin stolen" used
in a hi-jacking and the chase is on.
When we clear traffic and come to a somewhat unpopulated area the
Browning comes out.

He begins blowin out windshields on the stolen car(1966 Mustang)
They gave up the chase.
This was 1973....different era.

I bought a Browning Hi Power the next payday.

I picked up the 1975 vintage last year.
Around 150 rounds thru it..no hic-cups.

Anyone who laughs at a Browning HP doesn't know that the joke is on them!

Sounds like a bunch of "good natured" ribbing from those who have little, if any experience with a "High Power."

That's just their way of saying they're jealous. Even those who DON'T know anything about High Powers are enamored with them.

I shot my Mark III today, and the guy in the next lane was seeing me shoot much better groups at a further distance than him. He acted like he was checking for something in his jacket that was hanging on the hook behind me. Actually, he was trying to see what I was shooting. :D He could have just asked.

Hi-Power is one of the best fighting handguns ever made. I carry M&P9 but would feel excellently armed with mine.

I honestly cannot fathom why you would want to spend time at a range with such ignorant, obnoxious, and above all else biased regulars.

If it were me, then I would find a new range with more polite regulars who at the very least will keep their negative opinions to themselves, if not one with more friendly/sophisticated regulars who can appreciate just about any firearm because they're actually true blue firearms enthusiasts rather than just inspid brand-loyalists who make ignorant comments about firearms they don't personally care for.

I have liked the BHP Ever since 1959 when Jeff Cooper gave them a favorable mention in his book, Fighting Handguns. The first one I ever shot was a Canadian issue Inglis, in a “Commando Match”. pretty racy stuff
in 1960!

in those days I mostly shot 1911s. Finally got an Inglis of my own many years later. Now I have that plus a nice Israeli Mk. iii FN, a commercial Mk. III, and a Tisas BR 9. I still have a soft spot for the 1911, but the BHP is a classy, reliable weapon. It carries well, shoots well, and with modern loads pretty effective. I own the obligatory Glock but I much prefer the BHP for EDC. Not to mention that 9mm is cheap to buy...

I once had an FM as part of my duty rotation . I still consider the Hi Power to have the best grip of any " hi capacity " bottomfeeder . I have held one with Spiegel s , but the oem grips are still quite serviceable .

I see the additions to the first post where it was all good natured ribbing . But seriously , there is an entire generation of shooters ( and LEO , and more than a few FFL ) for whom "modern" pistols are Normal Guns, and all they've ever known . Saying to avoid such shooters would akin to avoiding many people under 50yo, and almost everyone under 40yo .

I have two Hi Powers, one I built for carry and action matches, another I built up for target work. My carry Hi Power (my first) probably has close to 10,000 rounds through it, or more, in the 6 years I've owned it. It is still tight as the day I got it, shoots the lights out, and runs like a Swiss watch. My target one is a newer and will be off for the Barsto match barrel treatment before long. It is a firearm I love and is the single handgun I have the most rounds through barring rim-fire. My two Hi-Powers are the reason I own very few semi-autos and have no interest in acquiring anymore. I maintain competency with my one Glock, I chase excellence with my Hi Powers. They're perfect for me.

I've never gotten made fun of for shooting a Hi Power, I've gotten a lot of respect for it though. In my two-gun organization I am the sole competitor shooting a Browning Hi Power and one of the few still using a steel framed gun. I have never felt I was at a disadvantage with the hi power, and my pistol scores usually confirm that. Ive had other competitors approach me after a stage and tell me "its obvious you shoot the (excrement) out of that gun".

Sorry if I'm gushing. I really love Hi Powers.

I love my Hi-Power copy. There is a reason why most militaries used them for decades until the Glock came along. P35 should have a place with the “old warhorses” in OP’s collection. There is an opportunity to track down a nice Inglis copy!

What did the song say "Jokers to the right....clowns to the left" or something to that effect.
That's "Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right" - Stuck in the Middle With You by Stealers Wheel.

Nothing wrong with a HP. I'm kinda surprised none of the droolers wanted to shoot it. After all, it is the great grand-daddy of all those double-stack plastic-fantastic wonder-nine designs they love so much!

If I still carried cocked and locked it would be one of my HPs!!

Fairly short butt and slim slide makes it ideal for concealed carry...... throw in a few Mec-gar 15rd flush fit magazines and one is Good to Go.
