New 617 10-shot?

I'm not necessarily a lock-hater because I have been able to find good used, pre-lock revolvers for decent prices. Along comes a NIB 617 10-shot that I could get for a good price. Any concerns or experience to know about before I consider it?

You better have a good supply of .22 because it's pretty easy to go through a brick during a trip to the range. Mine needed a good polish of the internals to work as it should but it's definitely a favorite.

Just picked up my new 617-8 4" 10 shot last Wednesday and put 120 rounds through it Saturday. Nice gun and I like it because it is similar to my 586-8 in weight/feel with less recoil and more economical range trips. Don't care for the all black Patridge front sight - painted the back half white (as I did with the red ramp on the 586). Low lighting at my indoor range.

I highly recommend this revolver.

Had one for a while, and a birth-year model 28 came along when I was broke, so I swapped even. I love my 28, but I do miss the 617-6. The lock didn't bother me at all, as long as I didn't look at it.

Mine was very inaccurate with any ammo we tried through it. It was a huge disappointment compared to some other S&W revolvers I've owned over the years. But it was probably just an exception and not the rule.

I have had my 10 shooter for about 5yrs and love it. It's presently fitted with a Vortex Venom Red Dot Sight in a Raptor Engineering Mount, and is an Accurate and Reliable Shooter

They are definitely a great revolver, like almost any Smith. While not having a lock in my opinion is nice for long term value, it shouldn't make much difference if you plan to shoot the hell out of it! My father in law has one and it is a lot of fun. The only downside to these pertains to the advice above, loading ten rounds of .22. get the speedloaders and a whole lot of ammo now while it's on the shelves. With that revolver you will need it all! Five cylinders per box, compared to over right cylinders for a regular six shooter!!

I have a 10 shot 4 inch 617-6 (the Mountain Gun version) with IL and it shoots as well as my 617 no dash 4 inch. You're not likely to be disappointed.

I just took delivery of a 617 4" and I am very happy with it. I like the fact that the size, weight and trigger pull are the same as a k-frame. It is a great plinker and training tool. Buy it!

Buy it!! My 617-6 with a 4" barrel makes me look like a better handgun shooter than I really am. I think it is pretty darn accurate. Never had a problem with it. I even like the factory grips. Lock? Non-issue to me. I tried it when I first bought it to make sure it worked, then unlocked it and left it that way ever since.

You will need lots of ammo, because you'll enjoy shooting it so much.

I Love my 617-6 with the 6" barrel. I did have to send mine back because it was spitting lead. S&W had it back to me quickly. Great shooter now. My oldest daughter has already claimed it on my passing she likes shooting it so much.

I've got one of the SpeedBeez speedloaders & loading blocks for my S&W 63.

Expensive but worth the money, it is a gamechanger at the range.

I wanted a 617 half lug or Mountain Gun but gave up and bought a 4.25" GP100. I shot the GP100 a few times, but since I load and cast 38 it doesn't make much sense for me to have mutiple 22s.

Im from the "I couldn't care less about a lock on a range gun" camp myself.
Most people I let shoot my 617-6's can't stop smileing long enough to notice the lock either.
My advise: Buy the gun, a couple of DS Speed loaders, some steel spinners and a case of ammo. You'll soon wonder how you ever lived without a 10 shot 617 in the collection. If you need more convincing do a search. 617 lust threads are a frequent and fun event here.
