Our TV died about ten years ago,and I never replaced it.The only programming I watched anymore was the news , but still had to sit through 15 minutes of commercials for a half hour news program.Got sick of commercials trying to sell me things I dont need or want. Was tempted to put a bullet through it many times. I went to my computer for news and never looked back. Has the TV of today gotten any better?

I have a TV primarily for Netflix and Amazon Prime. A lot of good programming is available when you want it, much of it original TV by the two. E.g., Bosch, Longmire, Justified. Or previous seasons of favorites from the past, like NYPD Blues.

I think we're in a golden age for TV.

TV = "a vast wasteland".....

That's terrible. I can only imagine how sad that was for you since it's taken you almost ten years just to be able to even talk about it.

Talk shows are totally worse politically now that I don't watch any talk shows.
For giggles I timed the commercials and the actual program or movie. The commercials average around 12 minutes and the program was about 8 minutes before the next commercial.
I only have free TV viewing. I don't watch any news programing except sometimes the weather reports. I watch mostly old TV programs. They are much more enjoyable to watch than the new programming.
I could do without TV but I would really miss not having the internet.

there are some on demand shows that are worth while and entertaining IMHO, amazon prime, or Netflix any of the on demand services have some things that are quality writing and have good production value. whatever filler they use to make up the broadcasts of the trillion channels available is not any better overall. commercials take up way too much of the broadcasts, and if you can avoid them all together or DRV and fast forward or skip, highly recommended.

TV is worse than ever. All propaganda all the time. The opiate of the masses.

As someone else has said, it gets worse all the time. Political correctness everywhere. I get tired of being " nudged " in the direction of Marxist/liberalism in almost every series.

Movies on Netflix and another provider or two are the only reason we ever watch TV, and even then not that much.
It's pretty scary that most people get their news from the MSM and censored Twitter and Facebook.

Our contract is up soon. We're thinking of ditching cable tv again. Tried an antenna but too many trees around.

And yes, the programming stinks. Bad. We primarily watch Netflix. Thinking about CBS All Access since the only shows we watch are there. NCIS and Blue Bloods. We'll see.

After my move, I discovered I can now get a decent number of over the air channels again. I dug out my old TIVO, which had been boxed up in storage for many years. It wouldn't boot - dead hard drive. I replaced it (with a bigger drive good for about 300 hours of HD) and I'm back in business. I'm going to go without cable and see if I miss it. I also have Amazon prime, and am investigating streaming services. My sister is using YouTube TV and likes it.

I use YouTube to see shows I like, sometimes old Australian shows like, Sea Patrol and, Blue Heelers.

And I get forensics shows, although whoever downloaded, Homicide Hunter did an awful job of syncing images and sound.

There are also some good wildlife shows and episodes of, River Monsters.
I've guessed every fish that Jeremy Wade has gone after.

I avoid most talk shows unless they have a guest I want to see. Otherwise, they're mostly just far left propaganda. I hate Stephen Colbert with a passion. One of the Jimmys is as bad (Kimmel) and the other is an adolescent ninny. The idea that he could replace Jay Leno is ridiculous.
