Hi I have a 5906. I am the original owner. I bought it new when they first came out in the late 80s. Have the box and all the paper work. I broke an extractor recently. I called S&W customer service. They emailed me a label and I sent it in on 9/11.

I received a letter today 10/18 stating that it would be 130.50. This is for PC fire arm & range test, $45.00. PC labor rate of 90.00 with ½ hour @$45.00 to install the extractor. The extractor is 27.50. I thought that it was under lifetime warranty.

I have several other S&W and have had to send a few back and they were covered. I don’t think the charges are too high, but I am just surprised that it’s not covered. I am going to call Monday and see what they have to say.

No. there really is no explanation. It is titled Sales Quotation. Just work to be performed and the prices. A line to reject the offer and pay return shipping.

I think the lifetime warranty started on guns purchased in 1989, so yours may be slightly early to qualify.

I remember someone telling me that that the lifetime service was originally for LE guns, and they didn't start offering it for commercial sales until at the end of the 80's or the early 90's. Not sure.

If it was sent to the PC for repair, instead of to Houlton (since they shifted production and repair of late production 3rd gen guns over to the Houlton plant), it might mean that the PC charged you for a repair done at the PC instead of it being done at the regular factory.

Let us know what they say when you call to remind them that you're the original purchaser.

The “Lifetime Service Policy” covers guns made after February 1989 and applies to the original purchaser. Guns made prior to that date came with a one year warranty.

They generally don’t ask if you’re the original owner, but they do know when the guns were made. I suspect yours isn’t covered because of the date of manufacture. You could have saved some money by purchasing and installing the extractor yourself, but it’s too late now.

The repair cost sounds like a bargain, since that they already have the gun. You would have paid at least half that if it shipped back to S&W on your dime and they generally go over the gun in detail and do additional work at no upcharge.

It DOES sound like a bargain if you have the money. :)

They have done work on it before. Years ago the trigger bar broke and they repaired it. I am going to dig the box and paper work out .I is sure it was in the lifetime warranty time. I read on a forum somewhere else that they had said that they were no longer going to service the gen 3 series.

If they say it’s not covered of course I will have it fixed. There is no problem with the cost. I am just curious why it’s not covered.

This was the third gun that I bought. The 3 gens had just come out. I searched for an extractor to do it myself. No place had them. S&W will not sell any. There was a complete slide on GUNBROKER. It went for over 300.00.

What is the serial number?? You can x out the last numbers if you want.
See the above posts what year was it made?????????????

You can go online to S&W / contact us / general contact information / inquiry / send a message and fill out the form with the serial number and they will provide the date of manufacture by return email within a couple of days.

S&W won't ship extractors to the general public because they were a fitted part on the third generation. I've got the guage set and every time I order an extractor, they want the numbers from my gauge set.

5906 TCK 23XX

My book is not that clear but 3 letters started 1984 and seems yours ( I cant find TCK) would be around 1988? But am not 100% sure. The actual product code (if you have the box) may help? Call SW don't email it will be forever.

Well, I just check the Standard Catalog of S&W, 4th ed. It states that TCB and TCW were made in 1988. It also appears that TCW pistols were made in 1989. It looks like TCW pistols were made in very late 1988 or very early 1989. This information would seem to indicated that TCK pistols were made in 1988.

Good luck.

Ah, but with many things, build date and sale date are 2 different things. Built in 88, but purchased late '89 means it should be covered for example.

Thank you everyone for the help. I looked for my envelope of recites. I used to keep in my safe, but I moved into a fire proof strong box. My wife put it somewhere and I cannot find it. She’s at work right now. I looked on the box and there is only the manual. So anyhow I am going to call S&W on Monday and see what they have to say. Either way it’s going to get fixed. Once again thank you.

I Contacted S&W today. Got transferred to women named Denise. Asked me if I was calling to make the payment to fix my gun? I asked why it was not covered by the life time warranty. She said that the extractor was normal wear and tear. It’s considered a wear part. They are right. I paid the 130.00 and said fix it. I am happy to get it running.
